  1. Glenn Roeder will spend the weekend mulling over whether to ask his chairman Freddy Shepherd to enter the race for Charlton Athletic's England striker Darren Bent.

The Newcastle United boss is an unashamed admirer of the powerful striker, but at £15m he was out of his price range in the summer.

However, despite the silly money being talked about after Charlton boss Alan Pardew announced yesterday that he was prepared to sell his prize asset, I understand that in the end Bent could eventually be bought for around £12m - if not slightly less.

This is probably more than Roeder will get from Shepherd in the January transfer window but at the same time the United chairman has always come up with the money for all his managers.

Defenders are United's immediate priority in the January sales but, if Roeder and Shepherd could get in a couple on loan, then the money could be there for a striker.

And how Roeder would love Bent to form a partnership with Oba Martins for the rest of this season when he returns from a knee ligament injury next month, and also with Michael Owen and Shola Ameobi when they return.

Despite United's injury situation, Roeder is desperately trying to do things the right way and is not doing a bad job of it. He wants his signings to have their best days in front of them and Bent, who will be 23 next month, certainly comes into this category.

At 5ft 11in he has the power and the physical presence and also the right attitude to be the ideal foil for Owen and Martins and, with Liverpool insisting Peter Crouch is not for sale, the Cambridge-born striker would be a great acquisition for United.

As soon as Pardew announced that Charlton were going to cash in on Bent, the striker, with England caps against Uruguay and Greece, was immediately linked with fellow London clubs Chelsea, Spurs and West Ham.

But Charlton would prefer to see Bent move out of London and it does not get much further than Tyneside.

Spurs boss Martin Jol, who had a £10m bid for Bent turned down in the summer, has already said he is not interested and may instead turn his attention to West Ham's burly striker Marlon Harewood.

And Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho is determined not to be held at ransom for any player he buys in the future and quickly backed off when quoted £18m by Charlton for Bent. Alan Curbishley, who signed Bent when he was manager of Charlton for a bargain £2.5m in the summer of 2005, has money to spend at Upton Park but West Ham is the last club the hierarchy at The Valley would like to see their man go to.

My information is that Bent was always heading to Old Trafford but Sir Alex Ferguson has his hands full trying to persuade Bayern Munich to let him have England midfielder Owen Hargreaves for less than £20m.

Like Dean Ashton at West Ham, Bent is a big pal of United defender Steven Taylor from their time together with the England Under-21 squad, and the two strikers have often said in the past just how much they loved the atmosphere at St James' Park.

And The Chronicle can reveal that after Pardew said Bent could go, the striker told colleagues that Newcastle would be one of the clubs he would love to join.

Would definately be a good move.  With Oba,  Owen and Bent,  we'd hardly have to play Shola,  too!

  2. BBC running the story several hours after i said about it!

Southampton have offered highly-rated youngster Gareth Bale a deal extension after rejecting two Premiership club bids, reports BBC Radio Solent.

Manchester United are believed to have followed Tottenham in making a firm offer for Wales international Bale.

But Southampton hope to keep the 17-year-old full-back through to 2009 with a one-year contract extension.

The Championship club have also received inquiries from Newcastle, Arsenal and Liverpool.

Southampton, keen not to see Bale leave in similar circumstances to Arsenal striker Theo Walcott 12 months ago, are confident Bale will sign the extended contract.

But if the defender turns down the offer, they believe they will have to cash in and sell him, before his transfer value diminishes towards the end of his contract.

Unless he's a diehard Newcastle fan,  or we offer £20m,  I think its safe to say this is a lost course

  3. Just listenened to his interview on .cock after todays game... He said about Neviles kick to the ankle;

"He caught me well and my ankles hanging off now,  but it was a good way of getting back at him by sticking it in the net"

Hopefully its nothing serious,  but nothing would shock me at the moment.

  4. Until last night it is fair to say the overwhelming majority of the population, possibly Sir Alex Ferguson and Jose Mourinho included, had not heard of David Edgar. They have now. Now they know not just who the 19 year-old is but what he can do. That entails an ability to support his attack from left-back, cut inside and from 25 yards use his right foot to shoot diagonally into the far corner. Edgar, not even in the 29 players listed on the back of the Newcastle United programme, has written his name into an increasingly beguiling title race.

It now moves on to Villa Park this evening, where Chelsea will begin seven points behind Manchester United. By 10pm it could be four and Mourinho might just express his gratitude to Edgar.

Born in Ontario, son of a former Newcastle goalkeeper, Eddie Edgar, David has been brought through the Newcastle academy and is rated highly. But he was only playing due to an injury crisis at St James' Park that is threatening to become a plague. Edgar had been drafted in at Bolton on Boxing Day and played right-back. That was his debut. Last night, in his first home game, he was at left-back. He is a centre-half by vocation.

But when James Milner, himself the scorer of an equally striking goal, ran into a dead-end on 74 minutes, he turned back and slipped the ball to Edgar. The teenager had been handed the daunting task of marking Cristiano Ronaldo and had been impressive in his diligence, particularly in the first half.

And when he accepted Milner's pass, Edgar strode forward nerveless, swerved inside into open space and drilled a shot across the penalty area. Paul Scholes, who had earlier provided an equaliser to Milner's opener and then put the visitors in front 23 seconds after half-time, got another significant touch. It was deft but it was enough to take the ball inside Edwin van der Sar's left-hand post.

It was already going to be a night to remember for Edgar; now it is one that he will never forget. Mourinho may have burst into the Blaydon Races but Ferguson was sanguine rather than angry.

    ...

Though the second half saw fewer chances - Ronaldo's header was nodded away by Solano and Park failed from seven yards - in terms of noise Edgar's variation raised the roof, and the stakes.

Man of the match: David Edgar (Newcastle)

    Even reading that gave me goosebumps.  So happy for the lad.  Roeder made the quote after of;

""Every person has a dream in their lives and it very rarely comes true. For David, and his father Eddie, who was here today, that is one of the few occasions where the dream has come true.""

And you could tell it had by his reaction

  6. The mirrors wording makes it seem like a done deal...  They were first with the Duff story too,  if I remember correctly.

I can only see this being worthwhile if there is something lined up with Emre leaving,  otherwise its just a pure waste of resources,  and goes against what Glenns said.

NEWCASTLE are ready to make a £5.5million swoop for Manchester City midfielder Joey Barton, writes MARTIN BLACKBURN.

Toon boss Glenn Roeder has put Liverpool striker Peter Crouch at the top of his January wish-list.

But he is also a fan of Barton, 24, and is keen to test the resolve of City boss Stuart Pearce.

Barton has a clause in his contract which allows him to talk to any club who make a bid of £5.5m or more.

Roeder has plenty of options in central midfield at present with the likes of Scott Parker, Nicky Butt, Kieron Dyer and Turkish star Emre.

But there are doubts over the long-term future of ace Emre so Roeder is keeping his options open.

The departure of Barton would be a major blow to City as he only signed a new four-year contract at Eastlands in July.

And with champions Chelsea showing interest in young England defender Micah Richards, 18, it could be a disastrous start to the year for the Blues.

    No thanks!
