This WC might be England's best chance for a good while, anyone agree? Lampard, Gerrard, Terry, Ferdinand, J Cole, A Cole, Barry and Carrick will all be playing at a much lower level 4 years from now, and that's pretty much the spine of your team. It also looks like, to an outsider, your younger players, the players in the U21s, don't look capable of playing at the high level required of a top international team. You'll possibly only have Rooney who you could easily say is a world class player in four years' time, whereas now you've got 3 or 4 who are playing at that level. It looks to me as if this is your last good chance for quite some time.

Mike is smug as shit England were really poor. The central midfield partnership did absolutely nothing. How many times did Gerrard and Lampard simply move the ball on to the wingers without any deliberation or intention? It was lackadaisical, and the performance of the two was just vapid. Where was the drive, the emotion? This is the WC, ffs. You started well and ended well, but in between was just 70 minutes of nothing football. You still obviously have the ability to do something in the tournament, but an abject performance like this after the group stage will signal an end to your participation. Look at a team like South Korea; they were playing a pretty shit team but they showed up, dominated the match and tried to create as many chances as possible. Otoh, once you went 1-0 up, you seemed to slow things down and that, imo, allowed the Americans to get into the game.
