But using your same line of thought, couldn't one argue that that was last season, i.e. in a virtually different team with different players, and hence there are no guarantees that Barton would be as good this season and beyond? Aye, he'd done nowt for 3 years, there's no guarantee whatsoever that he could keep up last season's form, and in particular on the sort of contract he seemingly wanted. What's the sort of "contract he seemingly wanted" got to do with whether or not he would achieve last season's form this season? He started off fairly well, and I would say that more often than not players in the final year of their contract step it up a notch to secure their future rather than lowering their level.

Really, really can't see it. Left back probably, forward possibly, anything else I just can't see. Except development players. Can't see it either. If at this point we get a LB I'll be pleased, and if we get a CF as well I'll be blown away. This is not what you said only a few weeks ago if I remember correctly (you would be pissed off if we didn't get a striker in before the end of the transfer window, but there was still time, or words to that effect). You are lowering your expectations from an already sub zero point. It seems the worse our predicament gets, the easier to please you become..?

You can justify his signing. You can justify not signing him too. You can't justify flying off the deep end in either scenario, and that's what people were doing. YOU can, and indeed will, justify anything the people in charge of this club do. If I can, I will. There is some good there. Other times I can't, because for a large part they have a habit of being charmless uncommunicative and cowardly tightarses.
