  1. My personal opinion is that PIF are a lot more to blame than the PL for the takeover failing to happen. The Saudi's appear to have been typically stubborn, condescending and unhelpful throughout the process. I think Slater's article in the athletic is probably an accurate summary of what happened, because of the open stealing of IP neither PIF or SA were ever going to pass the O&D test. The fact that they wouldn't acknowledge any wrong just made it easier not to say yes.

 That's my feeling as well. Premier League aren't blameless, and their handling of the situation (particularly communication) has been awful, but they aren't the main reason this failed. The Saudis have made it impossible to wave through at almost every step, every time it seemed close something new came out.

All PL had to do was say - FAIL for that reason.  But no....they sat quiet for 4 months.  PL are totally to blame for this farce.

  2. I still don't understand why MBS didn't put the pressure on Boris earlier? Surely if we need SA so much it wouldn't take much effort getting him involved.

Because MBS probably isn’t directly involved in this. PIF yes and I’m sure he takes credit for their successes but that’s all down to Yassir Al-Rumayyan.

Ok fair enough, but surely at the stage we're at now he's obviously aware of what's going on it wouldn't be hard for him to get in contact with Boris and have a discussion.

Then again I know fuck all about politics.

If he did get involved wouldn't that be playing into the hands of the PL who were basically accusing PIF of being the State?

  3. Does Staveley have any left? For a little while, she breaks off. “I’m crying, I’m sorry,” she says. She knew what she wanted to say if and when the takeover had been passed. A mission statement was prepared and practised. She would have talked about ambition and drive, about getting to the Champions League, about communicating with fans, embracing club legends, funding the women’s team, reaching out to local businesses and institutions.

    Instead, it is this.

“I’m trying very hard to understand,” she says. “Today is probably not the right day … I need to figure out if there is any route through this.”

“Even now, if the Premier League came to us and said ‘we will approve you’ we would do this deal tomorrow, all three parties of the consortium,” Ghodoussi says.

“Mike has agreed, we’ve agreed, the Reubens, PIF,” says Staveley. “The only reason the deal won’t get done is because the Premier League won’t pass it. Everybody is just so, so sad.”

Is there a chance, however slim?

“I don’t know,” she says. “I just don’t know. I don’t want to give up, but I can’t do it on my own. I’ve tried. I’ve tried and I’ve tried and I’ve tried. You need investment. You can’t just buy a club with no investment behind you. You need £600-700 million minimum, to do a deal like this. That was all in place.”

She breaks off again. “I can’t believe it,” she says.

Wording isn't quite strong enough but will do for now.

  4. Personally, I want to believe it's about Ashley raising the price at the last minute or just pocketing 17m so he can sell to a higher bid who have let him keep his SportsDirect banners. You can focus your anger squarely on him.

But if it turns out the deal was actually shut down/stalled by the PL at the request of other clubs - as that interview makes it sound - then what's the larger fucking point of anything? Ashley stays or Ashley sells to some "fit & proper" American owners, who promise to keep the club in its box between 7th and 17th, stay out of the actual transfer market and sell any real talent to the clubs that matter. Just a permanent undercard.

I think as much as we would like to blame MA - for me this sits firmly with the PL.  It should never have taken so long to process to even allow the agreement to expire.  Part of me thinks are PIF calling their bluff as I very much doubt they pull out of deals very often and also it's giving Bein Sports their wish.  But if the PL are never going to approve it - which it appears that way - i.e.making unrealistic requests - then I guess there is only so long you can wait before you say enough.

  5. I feeling like sacking off the PL all together - cancelling my Sky and watching another league.  It's disgusting what's happened - robbed a region of hope and more importantly investment, jobs when it needed it the most - just to keep the fat cats at the top happy.

Richards Masters should have to answer for his actions - but it will never happen.  Can do what he wants.

  6. What do people make of this quote by Amanda Staveley?

Explaining the crux of the problem, she said: “The piracy issue was not an issue but we tried to resolve it anyway.“They [the Premier League] tried to make the state of Saudi a director.

The PIF had agreed to become a director.“Do we give up now? I don’t know, there may be a way forward, but we have had to put a statement out.

We'll come back in another 6-12 months time!

Different backers?  Why do you think she said they had to put a statement out?

  8. Potential crumb of hope at the end statemented but don't understand why Amanda says they had to issue one??
