Or new club captain applauding the fans after the fans gave good backing during a defeat? People read far too much into this stuff

  2. The price stuff reminds me of Man Utd buying Tony Martial. The figure in the press was ‘up to £70m’, which seemed crazy. But Van Gaal (I think it was him) said “ but we only pay 70m if he turns into a 70m player, and then we are happy anyway”.

I think NUFC are making a similiar style bid, and if he were to flop it would maybe be a £40m cost. Under PSR the worse thing you can have is an expensive flop and structured deals help avoid it. But palace don’t want to risk share, they just want cash.

  3. On the cash flow, the club could easily make a £100m payment tomorrow. The club is debt free so any bank would provide a short term credit line. There are other clubs up to their eyeballs in debt who wouldn’t be able to do things like that. NUFC have an incredibly secure financial position, PSR just prevents it being used.

My guess is that it’s more that they don’t rate Guehi as a £70m player, and have offered add ons like England caps, or CL qualification. The point being if Palace do think he’s a generational talent then they should have no issue taking those add ons, as in their view they are guaranteed, as the player is so good. If they don’t agree to them it suggests they maybe know the price is too high

  4. He’s put his side of the story out.

the other side is clearly someone (or many people) put a complaint in and having reviewed what went on he got the sack. And his former employer has set about purging any records of him, and there’s claims his management agency has dropped him too.

So you can weigh up those two sides

  5. He used to scuttle about side to side, someone called him the crab, can’t remember who!

His stuff about coming back from the England squad to a lower level was just self indulgent bullshit. He compared himself to Lampard, At the same age Jenas was at Newcastle Lampard was still at West Ham, Jenas was given champions league starts and training with internationalswhen Lampard was in a side scratching around the bottom half.

Ultimately Jenas wasn’t good enough, he was decent in all attributes but top in none. Wasn’t a great passer, didn’t score that many goals, wasn’t good at protecting a defence, couldnt dictate play. That’s why it was spurs who came knocking and not one of the “sky 4” as was

So in next 7-9 days we need to:

    Sign a CB

    Sign a RW

Then sell / loan out at a minimum, Fraser, Lewis, Hayden, one of the GKs, Almiron. And then potentially Trippier, Targett, Wilson ideally too :D

Why do so many posters want rid of so many players? Do you all hate squad depth?

(I don’t mean Fraser, Lewis and Hayden before anyone mentions them!)

  7. I had given up on the idea of a top RW coming in, however given the two worst ran clubs in the world, Barca and Chelsea, both could do with offloading RWs there is an opportunity. Some clubs are going to rinse them, why not Newcastle

Oh we will, because we're still paying for every single player we've amortised since the takeover.

That's how this works, which nobody seemed willing or able to grasp at the time - Bruno might have "only" cost £8m the year we signed him, but he'll continue to cost us £8m every year until 2027. Same for everyone else we've signed.

Everyone understands it, except maybe you! 😀

Bruno signed a new contract that goes until 2028, that reduces the annual amortisation to more like 5.5m per year. Extending other players like Joelinton also reduces their amortisation per year, meaning the amortisation bill, absent new signings, will come down significantly.

But the original poster probably also understands allowable losses work on a 3 year rolling period and so there’s also much greater scope for losses this year.

& apologies to everyone for not sticking to the FFP thread

  9. The transfer pundits are totally clueless. They’re just making guesses. They didn’t see Olusa at all or Guehi until the bid was in, as if they now have the inside track.

  10. Tbh Howe is almost certainly peeved that the transfer business isn’t done and has also almost certainly made clear he needs another CB. Hardly breaking news.

Also almost certain Howe will get over it if the deals get done before the window shuts.

Don’t understand the logic of this comment, other than being something plucked out of thin air to moan about.

Agree. If he’s from a previous club Mitchell will have great insight about his character, the sort of insight you can’t get from scouting or data.

  12. This is a bonkers discussion. Bruno is entering his prime and is an elite player, these are the players you want. How would you ever expect to compete at the top if you get rid of your best players before they peak? That would mean other teams were always stronger.

As a club that isn’t competing realistically to win the PL and isn’t in the CL then sometimes a sale will be forced, but that’s a growing pain not an ambition.

I don’t think Ashworth planned to sell Joelinton either. It was Staveley and Howe who came out with the “if there’s no new contract it has to be a sale” stuff IIRC, and it was just a statement of the obvious- under PSR you can’t let assets leave for nothing.

People ignore Villa played far more games in Europe than Newcastle last season. Yes it was a Lower competition and could player a weaker team but they made the semi finals and by the knock out stages the played 6 games with a more full strength side and managed to finish 4th. Yes it’s a tall ask to do it but it’s not impossible

Yes, Europe had an outsized impact on Newcastle last year as a) it was the first year of it but also b) the draw was horrific, 6 tough, intense games including two teams that reached the semifinals.

Villa have done it before and are very likely to get an easier draw, they could hardly get a worse one, and may get 2 games against someone rubbish that they can play a second string for. It will have an impact on them but I don’t think it’ll be comparable

At this point, just sign Chalobah for £25m. We’re going to need two new CBs over next 12 months, and one at £25m who can also cover RB long term is a reasonable fall back.

Giving Chelsea have literally cast him to one side to get him off the books, there must be a chance of a loan with obligation to buy next season.

Prefer not to add average players to the squad on 5 year contracts. short termism

So reading that Peterborough get 30 percent of what Brentford get.

We then get 30 percent of what Peterborough get

So say it was 100 million (high I know)

    They get 30 million.

We then get 9 million of that.

Free money is free money but feels more likely to be at 50m, so 4.5m, not bad but won’t change the overall picture

We generally have too many centre backs, the quality is questionable no doubt and the injury’s in the medium term present challenges but come Christmas we will have more defenders than we know what to do with.

For 6 months. Krafth, Lascelles, Schar and Burn are all in their final year. IMO probably only 2 of Krafth, Lascelles, Burn and Schar will end up staying. Only have Botman and Kelly on long term deals. So there might be a glut for a few months, but then a problem next summer. May as well fix now.

  17. Sterling left Man City to get more game time as Pep dropped him for the biggest games, so the claim he wouldn’t want to leave Chelsea to play seems a bit daft.

However it will be on loan abroad. Nobody will pay a fee to Chelsea or give him a 5 year contract after the last 2 years. If Chelsea want rid they’ll have to loan him and hope he has a good year and then sell. I think Sterling will want out if he’s not even making squads, although I guess he’ll want his full Chelsea salary.

Id say it was a terrible transfer for Chelsea but they still have Lukaku on the books

  18. Chelsea have fucked it with Sterling, ruined his career AND given him an enormous long term contract. Loan to Italy or Spain is Chelsea and Sterling’s best case.

Makes Fraser Hayden and Lewis combined  look like peanuts in comparison

He was doing this loads last season. People will start noticing more now.

There's no doubting he's class for us but for whatever reason he definitely doesn't cover his left back well. It might be tactical.

Last season he stayed higher up and the LM covered. It’s a way of providing an outlet and stretching opponents but I think also using Joelintons / BDBs strengths (appreciate it was Hall yesterday but it’s a longstanding tactic)

Howe used this even before Gordon, e.g. watch the 22/23 season 3-3 with Man City where ASM always stays high, and exploited the gaps left when Walker tried to go forward

If it means we drop our alleged interest in Joe Gomez for £45m then get it done.

Whilst I think the fee palace want is outrageous this does put it into context.

If Gomez is 45m then Guehi is up toward 60m, in the market.
