Yes. Because he's been playing out of position for a good chunk of his United career. I hope this is all moot, as I trust McTominay more than I do most United players. And you can get your wish of not signing a player who scored a brace against Spain. And I'm out. If you want me back, turn the Bat Signal on. In closing. If Eddie Howe wants to buy McTominay (or anyone), then you should trust him, to the hilt. What the man has achieved with Newcastle, in a relatively short space of time, Is nothing short of extraordinary. Also, I've watched Scott McTominay over 250 times. My opinion deserves credence. The end.
-
I've watched him over 250 times for United and Scotland. And in most of those games, he's played as a number 6. Yeah... he's not a number 6.
-
Who don't rate McTominay? Oh. Right. Manchester United fans who don't rate anyone who isn't Keane or Scholes. Yes. ten Hag has done OK. But his transfer dealings have been a bit of a shambles. Who's arguing childishly?
-
No. I watched McTominay a few times at youth level. He was good. And you'd know this, because?
-
No. I'm disregarding people's opinions who are disrespecting a manager who had just brought European Cup football to Newcastle. If Eddie Howe buys him (and it's a big if) then you have to respect his decision.
-
As opposed to a Burnley loanee, Weghorst? McTominay spent a big chunk of his youth career playing as a striker.
-
It's true. It's amazing how many UEFA qualified coaches are on football posting boards.

In fairness, the Manchester United fans are the biggest self-loathing fans in the world. On redcafe, they have a performance threads for all of the squad members. It's just threads of United fans bitching and whingeing. If you look deeply enough, you'll find Manchester United fans wanting to sell Rashford. It wasn't that long ago that the Manchester United were comparing McTominay to Keane. They're a fickle bunch. As a Scotland and Manchester United fan, I want McTominay to stay at Manchester United and either play as a number 10 or even as a number 9. In midfield, he would be best utilised as a marauding box-to-box number 8.

At the moment, the only people who want McTominay to leave Manchester United is the Manchester United fans. There's been nothing to suggest that ten Hag wants him to leave. It's a nuanced one. Football fans don't always know what's best. Manchester United fans wanted Pogba back. They got their wish. Then it was a case of "be careful what you wish for". They then wanted Jadon Sancho. Once again, a case of "being careful what you wish for", as he's been underwhelming and they now, unanimously, want him to leave. Even ten Hag is facing questions about his judgment. Buying Antony for £80m is bizarre and Casemiro is going to cause him more problems than offer him solutions. Scott McTominay is definitely an EPL quality player. His problem is that for pretty much all of his 200 matches for Manchester United, he's been playing in a double-pivot. That doesn't suit him. His main attributes are driving forward with the ball and shooting. He should be playing closer to the opposition box than his own. But yes, we'll see in pre-season what becomes of McTominay. Another evidence that fans don't always know what's best: Norwich fans gave Billy Gilmour pelters. They thought he wasn't good enough for them. Now he's won over one of the best managers in the world (De Zerbi) and has now firmly established himself as a first team player. And the Brighton fans adore him.
-
Is that supposed to be me? If so, what "lies" are you referring to? I only disappeared because I'm busy. But yeah, of course he is EPL class. He's played over 200 times for Manchester United.

I'm Paul Scholes If you want to judge him over one match, then fair enough. But every outfield Manchester United player was trash yesterday. Newcastle were awesome. No other words to describe it. I've been honest another Scott McTominay. Maybe you should read what I've said. Never have I mentioned that he's the incarnation of Scholes or Keane. In truth, he's one of the most frustrating players I've ever seen playing for United (and Scotland). I've seen him go toe-to-toe with Verratti and Busquets... but I've also seen him look lost against the likes of Bournemouth. Motivated, he's dynamic, but it's how to motivate him, that's the question. SAF could probably turn him into a Patrick Vieira clone.
-
Nah. However, i did leave a little post in the match thread. It was a proper mauling. We were just lucky that it was only 2 and not 5 or 6. Fair play. Newcastle were far, far the better team. Congratulations.

Newcastle United 2-0 Manchester United (02/04/2023)
TheDarkKnight replied to Disco's topic in Football
Just briefly signed in to say congratulations. Newcaste were superb and thoroughly deserved the three points. We were lucky it was only 2-0 as it could easily have been 4 or 5. Manchester United were awful, but that would mostly down to the Newcastle players wanting it more. Congratulations. -
Hey, I'm dropping knowledge. Whether you wish to take it or not, as a collective, is entirely up to you. It's what football does to people, same with the net, it gives them Cyber Uefa coaching badges. Anyway. I'm out. Hopefully people here think they know McTominay a little bit more, as I've given an honest and accurate appraisal. For the record, I hope EtH doesn't sell him. Bye all. Best of luck... but not on Sunday.
-
Is it a premium price, though? When you think of the money spent on Pepe, Sancho, Grealish, it's close to £300m Yeah. He knows nothing about football. He's won zero. This is why not a club in the world will pluck a fan from obscurity to pick and choose and buy players. Generally, they think they know more than people who have been in football their entire lives and have coaching badges.
-
Cool. The anchorman position is a specialised position. That's why Manchester United splurged £60m on a 30 year old.
-
You'd better tell a couple of unknowns like Stuart Pearce and Graham Souness that their hot takes are crazy stupid, too. But hey, what have they ever done in football? Stuart Pearce crazy stupid hot take Graham Souness's crazy stupid hot take A lot of time it's better to just sit back and listen and then think, as opposed to making snap judgements. He started his youth career as a centerback. So it's hardly a crazy suggestion. His main attributes are defensive positioning. Odds are, when he does join a bigger team, they'll already have an anchorman, but one who has more passing ability.
-
It would be like swapping an apple for an orange. Totally different players. I think whomever buys Rice will play him as a center back.
-
Not a Newcastle fan but I have so much respect for Eddie Howe based on his treatment of Ryan Fraser. We all know that Fraser threw Howe under the bus at the end of Fraser's career at Bournemouth. This is pretty much Howe getting his revenge. He couldn't have did it straight away, as he needed to prove himself to the Newcastle players first. "Revenge is a dish best served cold". It's exactly how Sir Alex Ferguson would've handled things. A manager has to be able to trust a player. Fraser isn't the type of character you want to be in the Trenches with. And as a Scotland fan, I doubt trust him. He pulled out of a squad, citing injury, then was spotted training a day later. To be honest, I never want him to win another cap. So yes, you have a really top class manager.
-
My point is that the English midfield isn't really that strong. Behind Phillips and Rice Is an aging Henderson and a soon to be relegated Ward Prowse, there's very little. Also, people forget that Gareth Southgate tried to convince McTominay to play for England. I know that it's a cliche, but if McTominay were Brazilian and his name was McTominho, people's perception of him would probably be different.
-
That footballers progress at different ages.
-
Good questions. He's fine in possession. If you want a comparison, he's about the same level as Rice and Phillips. He's not the most adventurous of passers, but neither are the aforementioned two. His first touch is OK. His main attributes are dribbling and shooting. If I were going to put a label on him, I'd say that he's an old school box-to-box midfielder. He isn't an anchorman. He's better when he's closer to the opposition box than his own. He's unlucky playing in a generation where double-pivots are in fashion. The midfield position these days are broken into two halves, and I'll be honest, he isn't good another to play either. If he played in a three man central midfield were he was given licence to get forward, etc, he'd easily get double digits of goals a season. Since you mention Casemiro, he's a weird player. His positioning is world class but his passing is shocking. At Madrid he kept it simple, and was effective, but since he joined Manchester United I think he's been asked to pass through the lines. He can't do that.
-
That's why Arsenal were happy to sell him? Him and Longstaff will be long gone when Howe gets the green light to spend.
-
It's weird how little fans really know about football. If you watch players, lots will do this. It's called a second degree counter press. If you stay on an opposition player, it stops them from pressing the player that has the player. It's 101 of coaching.
-
Yes. I don't get the snobbery. We've seen from the previous two Scotland matches what he can do. In that time, what have Willock and Longstaff done? McTominay has scored 4 goals in two games (2 goals against Spain) Willock and Longstaff have probably watched "Wednesday" on Netflix.
