Newcastle target top football doctor Roddy MacDonald

By Brian McNally 26/04/2009

Alan Shearer is hoping to tempt top doctor Roddy MacDonald back to Newcastle for a third time. MacDonald, one of the top rated medics in British football, is working for Martin O'Neill at Aston Villa after leaving Newcastle shortly after Shearer's retirement as a player in 2006.

Shearer parted company with Magpies club doctor Ian McGuinness last week after striker Oba Martins pulled out hours before kick-off against Stoke citing an injury Shearer knew nothing about.

As he looks to shake up his backroom staff, boss Shearer has made MacDonald a top target.

MacDonald played a key part in helping Shearer through several injuries and oversaw Michael Owen's recovery from the knee ligament damage he suffered playing for England at the 2006 World Cup finals.

Carver has been quoted in the Sunday Sun saying he's nothing else in the pipeline btw.

That confirms it's on then.
