brummie
There was a thread about this a while back, and I'd have tagged this on there but can't find it. Thought it might be of interest. Bit from article in the local press down here re Ellis selling to Lerner... Ellis says Villa were attractive to Lerner because of their tradition and name and also because of the sound financial footing he had placed it on. "He didn't have to find any money to repay any debts," added Ellis. "They had looked at the likes of Newcastle and Everton and others but they all carried debt. http://icbirmingham.icnetwork.co.uk/mail/sport/page.cfm?objectid=17993758&method=full&siteid=50002 So maybe your hated chairman actually is worse than our old one .... Guest Imperio
Most clubs have debts, Ellis did well at securing Villa's place in the Premiership but never showed enough ambition for my liking. I don't know what the case was with Ellis and how he handled things behind the scenes, but from just reading Bobby's book I'd say Shepherd probably is a worse chairman, but I wouldn't want Ellis to be chairman here. Rob W
Ellis & FFS are similar - they keep the club on a reasonable keel financially but they lack any vision FFS at least tends to stay out of selecting the team - Ellis was a notorious meddler at all levels

I'm no Ellis fan, but even I wouldnt believe that. As for ignoring the fans, he specialised in that, though. And he only sold because he's clearly not long for this planet. Dave
Shepherd's spent far more of course, but they've both got their clubs to average 5th...
brummie
"And he only sold because he's clearly not long for this planet." Do the aliens have him penciled in as an future abductee? No, but the cancer which has seen him have six operations in two years and his age (82) aren't suggesting "reading really long books" as a suitable hobby to take up in his retirement. You have to remember that a large portion of the clubs debt was down to the stadium expansion that will eventually pay for itself, so while Ellis will take credit for keeping Villa debt free, he has never shown the ambition to improve the club like Shepherd has (even if it hasn't always worked out)
