Guest
We beat Villa and Chelsea beat the Mackems and we are there. Stay positive. If Sunderland don't win tomorrow.
Dave
Considering Ashley's unlikely to suddenly decide to spend decent money, I'd almost go so far as to say a year in the Championship interests me more than another year playing shite with the same odious twats wearing the shirt and getting beat every week in the Premier League. LoveItIfWeBeatU
We beat Villa and Chelsea beat the Mackems and we are there. Stay positive. If Sunderland don't beat Portsmouth tomorrow. If they draw with them they could still stay up on goal difference. I was apathetic then we got our fate back in our hands. No longer having our fate in our hands and the way that makes me feel proves I'm not apathetic at the moment. I am going to hate the wait this week and then the emotional turmoil of next Sunday. I will be gutted if we go down. If we go down I may be apathetic about next season. I don't know yet.

You're right, tbh. If we come straight back up, I don't think one season in the Championship would be the end of the world. If we come straight back up. I do think if we stay up Ashley will have learned his lesson and provide £20m + player sales money to Shearer. If we go down God knows what he'll do. If we go down and then come straight back up we'll still have lost our Premiership kudos and will struggle to attract good players. A season of fighting to stay up again would probably follow. We may have to build a decent, young, team to bring us up and then keep us up. A team of ageing players in the Championship aren't going to cut it if we're promoted. If we stay up at least we could aim to improve to mid-table next season. There is some bollocks in the media about "maybe it would be good for Newcastle if they went down so they could rebuild". I'd rather rebuild in the Premiership than in the Championship. The likes of West Brom, Middlesbrough, Hull and Sunderland would probably be able to keep most of their squad if they go down. We aren't like that at all.

If we've got a good manager and a bit money, players would still more than likely choose us than the likes of Bolton, Stoke, Wigan, etc.

I put the question to an avid West Brom fan recently, would he prefer a good season in the Championship or a relegation season in the Premiership and his answer was the Premiership every time. I was quite surprised by that, but thinking about it, the Premiership is the only place to be regardless of how your team plays. It'll be disastrous in more ways than one if we do go down. If we go down I think the days of NUFC coining in money from a 50,000+ crowd is over until the next time we are competing near the top of the Premiership (if we ever do). Say we go down, all it will need will be a good start to the season and this place will quickly get buzzing again.
Jayson
How likely is it that if we went down we'd just come right back up ? I feel we could be down there for a few seasons...we're not like other teams who have gone up and down. Sunlun/birmingham etc We're a bigger side, the championship sides will step it up everytime. We'll lose many players.....this wont just mess up our ability but any chemistry the side has now. (Admittedly not much but more than we would have). So then you have to pu tnew players and get them working well together. I just have a hard time believing we'll be consistantly better than nearly every other side in that league if we went down. We were already dodgy against lower league opposition in our better days.
