Thespence
Farrington going ballistic in one article!!! MIKE ASHLEY is considering appointing Spanish coach Marcelino Toral as Newcastle manager next summer – IF he decides to take the Magpies back off the market. With Ashley pondering whether to call off his attempts to sell the club for a second time, caretaker manager Chris Hughton is ready to be asked to take charge of team affairs until the end of the season. And, in anticipation that there may still be viable bids for the club eight months down the line, he would then look to approach Marcelino about becoming Newcastle's permanent manager. Marcelino was sounded out about the United job early last year, even as Kevin Keegan began his second spell in the Newcastle hotseat. Back then, Marcelino was already lined up to take the reins at Zaragoza after a successful spell at Racing Santander. But Newcastle are aware that the 44-year-old’s contract with the mid-table La Liga club expires next June. And Ashley is set to use the man who made the original approach for Marcelino – United’s then vice-president Tony Jimenez – to make another overture to one of Spain’s most respected young coaches. Tyneside businessman Barry Moat and two American-based groups remain hopeful of clinching a takeover deal which would end Ashley’s troubled days on Tyneside. But it now appears that Ashley’s plans for United may be most reliant on the progress of the Office of Fair Trading’s investigation into his main sports retail business. Meanwhile, Newcastle’s promotion push has been hit by the loss of key defender Steven Taylor for at least FIVE games. Although sources close to the player have insisted his hamstring problem will keep him out for a month rather than a reported six weeks, United’s congested league programme means he will still be sorely missed. http://www.sundaysun.co.uk/sport/newcastle-utd/newcastle-utd-news/2009/10/18/ashley-lining-up-new-boss-79310-24954843/
