Cousins cycling Lands End to John O'Groats for Sir Bobby/St Oswalds - Completed!

Dear All

 

My cousins will be doing a cycle in May 2010 to raise money for two charities - The Sir Bobby Robson Foundation & St Oswalds Hospice, the target is £5,000 for each charity. They plan to cycle from Lands End at the bottom of the country upto John O'Groats at the very top of the country in 10 days.

 

This is a totally self sufficient charity cycle, they are paying for everything themselves with no funding from the charities.

Just an update:

 

My cousins did a coast to coast training cycle from Whitehaven to Tynemouth last weekend and it went very well, they are doing pretty intense training to make sure they are ready for the real thing in 4 weeks time.

 

We have also raised £835 so far so so please donate.

My cousins were in The Journal today

 

BROTHERS Mark and Paul Dewar are geared up for an epic charity challenge.

 

The pair are preparing to embark on a gruelling cycle trek that will see them ride 1,150 miles from the South West of England to the most northern point of Scotland in 10 days.

 

Mark, 30, of Hedley Terrace, Gosforth, and 33-year-old dad-of-one Paul, a dentist, of Moorside South, Fenham, Newcastle, hope to raise more than £6,000 for the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation and St Oswald’s Hospice.

 

Supported by their retired dad Andy, 58, the trio will set off from Land’s End to Okehampton on May 3. Each day they hope to cover up to 135 miles until they reach John O’Groats.

 

Mark, who works in human resources at metro operator Nexus, said: “We were in the pub and decided that we needed to push ourselves.

 

“We considered a number of options, including, a sponsored silence and sitting in a bath full of cold baked beans. Neither of us have ridden a bike for more than 20 years, so we knew it might be quite a challenge.

 

“As we are trying to avoid A roads for safety, it is further than the usual route.

 

“I think we are both a little nervous about it but as it is fully funded, all the money we make will go towards the charities, which are close to our hearts.

 

“We are both Newcastle United season ticket holders and had the pleasure of meeting the late Sir Bobby Robson, who was a great ambassador of the North East.

 

“He was such an inspirational man and most people know someone who has been touched by cancer so hopefully we will be able to raise a lot of money.

 

“St Oswald’s Hospice provides a life changing service, providing vital care and respite to children and adults.

 

“We are very grateful to dad, without him the trip would not be possible as he will be supporting us in a van on the entire journey.”

 

The brothers have been busy training for the trip up to six times a week, cycling 25 miles a day.

They are having a charity night this Saturday at the Northumbrian Piper, map here

 

Where we are having games, an auction with potentially, NUFC signed shirt, NUFC signed football. Cricket bat signed by Durham CCC, Newcastle Falcons shirt signed by the team, a hamper, plus others.

 

Im not sure on availability but if anyone lives near by, its £5 entry and that includes a buffet. The room is limited to 70 people and im not sure how many tickets we have sold. If anyone lives nearby and fancies coming along they are welcome as long as we dont go over the limit of 70 people for fire regulations.

 

If anyone does come along from here, if you find me floating about say hi, will be nice to put faces to names on here.

We made approx £1,900 last night from the charity event & auction so the total is now £2,900 for charity.

 

I won the auction for the signed & framed NUFC shirt, ended up going for £150 after some stiff competition
