Guest Brazilianbob
Just read the Donnachie artice in the Journal/Chronicle? online. Very interesting. Apparently there are EPL plans to set up a new category of academies. To be number one you have to have a school, either onsite or nearby, with everything that goes with it, ie support staff and teachers etc, that the 14 year old kids can attend. If you attain number one status you can sign kids from anywhere (i assume in the world) and they will also be playing in european competitions instead of the normal domestic competitions. Apparently we are looking closely at this even though it is a huge financial commitment. I would find this development quite exciting for NUFC. Perhaps if we go for it the school could be called the Andy Carroll instititue, because it will probably be funded by his transfer fee. The downside is if we don't subscribe to the scheme, it also means that clubs that do, like Arsenal and Chelsea etc ,can take our local youngsters into their academies, and where does that leave us! Guest Roger Kint
Chance for the rich clubs to harvest all the talent from the smaller clubs which in turn makes them poorer? What a stupid idea. Please tell me thats not true?
Guest ObiChrisKenobi
http://www.newcastle-online.org/nufcforum/index.php/topic,60541.0.html not good enough? Is there a link to the article you read? Interesting it only mentions the Premier League are interested in this, from what you typed. Can't imagine any clubs outside of the Premier League would be interested in this at all.

Village Idiot
It is the way Arsenal have done things for more than a decade, difficult to replicate, but, according to Donachie, it is achievable. Arsenal academy isn't great. It's their scouting network that's the winner.
Guest Roger Kint
Arsenals academy has about 15 foreign kids in it now, god knows how many have been scouted and brought in over the last 10 years too. Some people must think they just happened to be living in North London before they joined Just looking at their academy even the English kids sound suspect: Samir Bihmoutine, Nicholas Yennaris, Jeffrey Monakana, Chuks Aneke, Jernade Meade, Alban Bunjaku, Benik Afobe, Zak Ansah, Nigel Neita
Village Idiot
Also I suppose these "European competitions" are new, I'm certain our kids don't play in any bar the odd international tournament. Personally I don't see the need of an "U18 Champions League" which would be a huge expense with dubious benefit for the kids' development. About the reform to be honest it makes sense. If you extract kids from their communities you have to make sure there is a structure to look after them, particularly if they come from other nations and don't even speak the language. That costs money, but it's how it has to be done for the sake of the kid. What is needed is protection for small clubs so their players aren't easily pilfered. Arsenal academy is average. It's their scouting network that's the winner. But their scouting network populates their academy with young french players, probably because the Clairefontaine Academy is within the Arsenal catchment area of one and a half hours traveling time by high speed jet! summerof69
I think that we should look in to the idea of having a school it sounds like a good way to develop youth. Though i don't like the idea of the EPL doing this because the smaller clubs would have no decent players left
