Arsenal: Young, gifted and English?

I do not understand why arsenal is always to be blamed for the lack of English in their side? It is not that Arsenal has mistreated the English players, or that Arsenal have discriminated against the English players. Without arsenal, could Ashely Cole achieve what he has achieved thus far? Did Arsenal not try their best to retain Ashely Cole? How about the hefty fee paid by Arsenal to secure Theo Walcott? Is Walcott not England born and bred? It's also no secret that Arsenal are interested in Nigel Reo Coker, and were interested in Michael Carrick, both of them English I suppose.

 

Arsenal are just doing something everyone else are doing, finding the best players. Do people really think that Manchester United bought Carrick because he is English? No, Manchester United bought Carrick because he is proven here, and they have burnt their hands with Veron, Djemba x 2 and Miller. Chelsea bought SWP, but how many people are still celebrating this fact? Lampard, Terry, J+A Cole, are still in the squad because they are good enough in the squad, not because they are English. Alan Pardew talks crap about English players bla bla bla, yet he is the very one who loaned Aliadière from Arsenal, who brought Spector, Pantsil, Benayoun, Carroll, Gabbidon, McCartney, Tevez and Mascherano to Upton Park. Are these Johnie foreigners so great that there are no English equivalent?

 

Arsenal have done nothing wrong, and people should stop pointing fingers at arsenal for the sake of pointing fingers.

The debate concerning the impact of foreigners on the English game is perhaps done and dusted now. Some might say that that was so 1990’s. You remember the different points of views though: those on this side of the fence saying that too many foreigners in the English game meant that no one pays attention to the genuine English talent of young footballing hopefuls. Those on the other side of the fence saying that the influx of these foreigners in the premiership can only help these English players to improve their game i.e. become more technical and skilful, something that we are often accused of lacking. Well let me reignite the fire.

 

Whatever the case, certain clubs (and rightly so) were singled out for not nurturing English talent. I will name the clubs and you can play “name the Englishman in the first team eleven”; Arsenal, Bolton, Blackburn, Chelsea, Liverpool. Things have improved however with some of the big clubs concentrating more on English talent even going as far as buying English players!

 

Chelsea has improved in this regard in the last couple of years, even though their managers are still employed from the continent, Mourinho and Ranieri have nurtured John Terry out of the youth and reserve teams, and bought promising players, turning them into world beaters, such as Frank Lampard, and Joe Cole. Liverpool a club based on the tradition of local boys, have allowed their English players to come through the ranks and establish themselves in the first team: Michael Owen, Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher. The fundamental emphasis here is on the combined influence of an English style of play correlating with the continental style of which Liverpool and Chelsea have had successes with. Terry gels well with Ricardo Carvalho, and Gerrard the same with Xabi Alonso.

 

There is still however the clubs that still misbehaves when it comes to the representation of English players in their side, of which I have already mentioned, and Arsenal seems to be the main culprit in this regard.

 

Arsenal was not always the mixture of French, West African, and East European players. Arsenal was very much like the West Ham of today. They had a roll call of English talent regularly transferring to the national side: David Platt, Ian Wright, David Seaman, Kenny Sampson. Then there were those players who started as apprentices, then became mainstays in the team, Tony Adams, David Rocastle, Charlie George. Now what English player can we say in the current Arsenal team will generate shirt sales? Well there is just the one and his name is Theo.

 

I have always admired Wenger’s reign as the Arsenal boss; three league titles, four FA cups, a Champions league final, along the way abolishing the tag “boring Arsenal” and making the team renowned as one of the most attractive playing teams in the world. But where are the English players? So long Ashley Cole, hello Theo Walcott. There was uproar of his inclusion in the England’s World Cup squad and rightly so. Eriksson’s management of the whole situation was handled badly. What right did this kid who hadn’t even touched premiership grass, to be included within the England squad? Wenger’s handling of Walcott however has to be praised.

 

Wenger’s treatment of Walcott is what you might call the softly-softly approach similar to George Grahams treatment of Perry Groves in the 1980’s. Arsenals Champion’s league group game against Hamburg when they were drawing to German visitors illustrates Wengers approach with Walcott. The game seems destined for a draw; regardless of the pressure amounted on the Hamburg goal. The Gooner faithful result in shouting Walcott’s name and their wish is dually granted. 1-1 soon becomes 2-1, 2-1 then became 3-1. Full time, three points, two assists, top of group G. All thanks to a promising young English talent. Wenger has said that Arsenal need more English players and Walcott is definitely better than Francis Jeffers. But let’s not get too excited, Walcott is a start, but there is need for improvement.
