I’d rather we looked at players that can cover the midfield roles like Bruno does,  than sign a specialist holding midfielder who offers nothing else than to sit in front of the defence. Having a player that can alternate with Bruno up and down the pitch would be magic.

I remember reading something about it being to do with when tactics shifted massively to 4-2-3-1/4-3-3 and away from 4-4-2. 
 

Still, the more defensive minded midfielder has always been 4 and always will be, for me. Don’t really get why formations would make a difference? 
 

Maybe a European thing? I remember Klopp referencing ‘the 6’ a lot. Then all the hipster journos and statto types using it all the while.

Trippier will be 33 towards the start of next season. The club will want to gradually phase him out after next year I reckon, and move him to the bench/coaching. I can’t see him being first choice RB at 34/35, no matter how great/important he is at the moment.

A 4 is Batty, Kante, Makelele

 

A 6 is Pirlo

According to whoscored he starts every week for Lyon so it is a bit hard to imagine unless Trippier's phasing out is going to start a lot sooner than we think.

Trippier can also play LB. In fact he is probably the best LB at the club, just so happens he is the best RB in the league so he plays there

Fit? It’s known that the club bought Bruno to play him further up the pitch but have been hampered with this plan by injuries and lack of alternatives. A more defensive minded midfielder would allow Bruno more freedom to hurt the opposition, rather than sitting on the edge of our own box at times.

What in asking is would we change the formation to allow one more in the midfield setting as though this current system is working so well?

No, I don’t think so? It just means one player would be more defensively minded than Bruno currently is and would provide more cover to the back four than he now does. Bruno would then step up to do the Willock/Longstaff role/position. Ideally, we would get a Manu Kone type who is box to box like Bruno, but is comfortable and efficient doing the defensive stuff too.

More cover for the back 4? We currently have the meanest defence in the league with loads of clean sheets with Bruno where he is.

A DM would give more cover to the back four than a box to box Bruno. Whether we need that at the current time with our results to date is another thing.
