There's enough of a catchment area, and disenchantment from mackem fans, for them to be a Football League club if the Thompsons are serious with their ownership long term. That must be the first time they've broken the 2,000 aside from the games against North Shields, no? I suspect they are serious indeed. Seems only right that as the game has got quicker, more technical, and with more money at stake more money spent on refereeing would also improve standards. Most EFL referees will have a job alongside it, so you can imagine it's pretty tiring being at work all week and then having to run around SJP for 90 minutes on a Saturday. As you say, it should be more professionalised and then referees would be able to train during days they are not officiating rather than juggle a second job.
