Oba'a in need of support

Glenn Roeder has warned Newcastle United they must help leading scorer Oba Martins in the goal stakes in the run-in to the end of the season.

 

United go to Bramall Lane for Saturday's game with Sheffield United without a Premiership goal to their name since they beat Liverpool at St James' Park on February 10.

 

And although he scored against both Waregem and AZ Alkmaar in the UEFA Cup, Martins, like United, has drawn blanks against the mediocre opposition of Wigan Athletic, Middlesbrough, Charlton Athletic and Manchester City.

 

However, Martins still heads to South Yorkshire for tomorrow's overnight stay just outside Sheffield with 16 goals in his first season with United.

 

And Roeder told me today: "I have no doubt that Oba will get his four goals which will take him on to a nice round 20 for his first season, and this is a great achievement.

 

"But in recent weeks we have become too reliant on Martins, and because he is still only 22, he is starting to feel the pressure.

 

"Don't forget he also has the new experience of playing in every game - something he never did with Inter Milan - and as a team we have to help him out.

 

"We cannot become a one-man band.

 

"He missed a great chance against Charlton Athletic at The Valley and I think everyone saw how frustrated he was against Manchester City.

 

"That's why we need his striking partner - whoever that may be - and the wide and central midfielders to start getting their names on the scoresheet.

 

"A lot has been said about Peter Crouch, Craig Bellamy and Dirk Kuyt down at Anfield, but before Liverpool went to play PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League on Tuesday night Oba's 16 goals meant that he had scored more goals than all of these three."

 

Martins will have the legs on Sheffield United's central defender Chris Morgan on Saturday, but the Nigerian international will need other qualities in what will be a tough game - and so too will United.

 

And while both Michael Owen and Shola Ameobi are edging closer to a United return, Blades boss Neil Warnock will have to do without his main striker Rob Hulse for the rest of the season and this has got to be a big help to Newcastle.

 

So will the fact that, with Titus Bramble and Oguchi Onyewu out in the cold, Craig Moore could play alongside Steven Taylor in the United back four at Bramall Lane.

 

Both Moore and Stephen Carr were back in training today after their knocks picked up against Man City and they should be available to Roeder.
