Hugo Viana

In some ways similar to Luque, technically very gifted but didn't have the right mind for the Premiership

Surprised this comparison hasn't been made yet. Very similar in terms of playing style ('lazy') and NUFC career.

Think Luque is more likely to succeed. Not that either are cut out for it. Agree with the 'lazy/lethargic' comment. They arent hustling about at players like we expect them to. The dirty work isnt really in their nature.

I rate both highly to be honest. Viana REALLY hasn't lived up to his potential - I really thought he would flourish under SBR - thought he was a great passer with great vision - who would thrive with a very defensive midfielder next to him. NUFC have this knack of making players shite - how comes supposed stars can come to Newcastle, struggle then be given away for next to nothing, only to become successful elsewhere?! (Tomasson etc) Some lose their confidence and form so much at Newcastle, that they struggle to get it back - Robert is one, Viana another, Kluivert another - same with Boumsong. All of those were highly-rated before they arrived. Luque is the same - but hopefuilly SA hasn't written him off just yet. I'm hoping Dyer doesn't go that route either - I think he is FINALLY clear of his injuries, and with SA's methods - he is less likely to suffer in future - would be typical Newcastle if he was to leave for a paltry 5m, then have an amazing season with Spurs or someone. I think Newcastle aren't patient enough with the right players - especially foreigners - yet they can persist with home grown Ameobi and 'next great England defender' Bramble. Yet some imports, who ooze class, such as Kluivert, Luque, Viana only get one chance then they're out. Even Martins last year was touch and go for a while - people were getting on his back from the off - luckily he found his feet soon after - if he took a month or so more - would've been the end of the world for some. Its good he showed his obvious class - I think Emre is pure class too - needs to be given chance to show it. Same with Duff - all these players haven't achieved as mcuh as they have by being crap or lucky or journeymen - form is temporary, class is permanent.

He had a decent first season when he was playing in the middle, showed some good touches and set up a canny amount of goals IIRC.

Second season when he played he was on the left wing and that isnt his position as he doesnt have the pace to play there.

It was first season on the wing more tbh Robert did his back in in pre-season. Did better out there than in the middle.

From Skysports.com.

They say that Viana has been sold by us this year? If I look on other places, for instance nufc.com . They claim that he was sold in march 2006.

"OUTS: Antoine Sibierski (Wigan), Titus Bramble (Wigan), Scott Parker (West Ham), Hugo Viana (Valencia) "

Can anyone explain this?

He once came on for Portugal against England too and looked f****** ace.

Didn't he score one of the penalties?

He missed one didn't he iirc? In Euro 2004.

Was never allowed to play in his favoured defensive midfield role at NUFC.

A very good comparison: Riquelme.

You either take a gamble by building the whole team around him to make him shine,

or simply just don't use him cause he's shit as a team player.

At that time he shouldn't come to Newcastle, who's ruled by Shearer. No one will let Viana to take up the key player role.

He simply wasn't suited to the Premiership and he's nowhere near the player Riquelme is.

he has talent, but is too inconsitent and was bought for the wrong reasons. he was very much a "no 10" type and was asked to fill in for speed and on the left.

simply isn't up to the speed of the epl. great passing at times though...

Best defensive midfielder we've ever had at the club and should have been given the 99 shirt for his work in the Falklands.

He didn't show anything like the ability to deserve or retain the "key player role".

Exactly what happened to Riquelme during his time at Barca.

That's why it's his fault to find a club that don't allows him to be "No.10".

He should either find a relegation team or remain at Sporting but not coming to EPL. This is his fault and he's bearing the result.

He has the ability to succeed but will never utilize for us. Actually it will only be utilized if he remains in Sporting for his whole career.

Simply, Grandpa Simpson (Sir Bob R) delayed and delayed and delayed giving him a chance that the lad (who looked very classy on sub run outs when he first arrived) went off the boil and became justifiably moody. Went to Spain and did moderatley well.

Players make themselves key. David Rozehnal and Geremi have done it already...

:D :D :D

a handful of friendlies, come on mate :D

think back, how many players showed a bit of promise, but are now regarded as failures?

jj, parker, viana - dare i even say bramble, the list goes on...

its that kind of slavish, blinkered worship of players who've done fuck all, when combined with an inability to take off the black&white-tinted glasses, that has some fans still thinking shite liek Shola and the likes of Dyer will still fulfil their so-called potential.
