quayside
Do we need one of the greatest predatory goal scorers ever in our squad even though he might pick up a groin or thigh strain every now and then and even though he may get a "dead leg" in a Toon training session just before he declares himself fit for an England game ? Er yes - when we've got a squad to handle that sort of crap - and we are getting to a point where we can imho.
Quailman
Of course we need Owen, he is someone we can rely on when playing!
johnnypd
definite question marks about his ability to play up front in a 4-3-3, but he played in a similar front line at madrid with Ronaldo and Raul and according to some ended the season with the best goals to minutes ratio in la liga. outside the box i think he is a passenger and has poor general play so it is crucial to get him as close to the penalty area as possible. obviously it is easier to do this in a 4-4-2 but then there are question marks about his prospective strike partners. Martins is too erratic and "selfish" to do a straight forward support striker role. And Owen is coming to the stage of his career where he needs a player to do his running for him. even in the past his best partners have been Heskey and Anelka, players with pace and strength who will run all day and night. thisis only going to be more true now after many injuries. so Viduka, who also has limited mobility across the pitch, is miles from being an ideal partner. and no-one knows if he is even the same quality of player as he was before his legs snapped. if he is, then he is always going to get goals and that is a quality that you dont come across too often in a player, but finding the right balance in the team to make it work for him might be difficult. Guest Pie
Why wouldnt we need a top class finisher?
ShearMagic
No, we don't NEED him, but I wouldn't get rid of him. Our injury history is the worst ever, therefore the more players the better. And plus, he's a quality finisher who will score 20+ goals for us this season if he stays fit.
Guest Gemmill
He's the best player at the club when fit, and the only player we have that could command a starting place for the top 4 clubs when fit. How could we not need a player like that? (when fit)
Rob W
with Owen here it (might) attract other decent players - no-one top rate is going to say "I've always dreamed of playing alongside Viduka" are they?
Guest thenorthumbrian
IF Owen can stay fit IF he doesn't fuck off at the first chance IF he shows he wants to play for us IF he shows he regards the Toon as more than mere fitness training for ingerland IF he can regain the form he had at his best ... Then yes we should keep him but with Owen there is a lot of IFS with him.
