This. He'll be our most important player this season. Early to say but from the little I've seen he's way more intelligent with and without the ball than any of our midfielders. Not a huge feat considering who he's up against but clear improvement anyways.

Didn't think Merino was bad at all. He's calm and usually looking for a tidy forward pass. Not just booting it forward like Shelvey vs Tottenham.

You've got to admit it takes something special to make as many fuckups as they have and end up in the Premier League with Rafael Benitez at the helm and record season ticket sales. Yeah that's true. And that something is a bit "special" and very gullible.

In my opinion at this point the money spent really has nothing to do with how much of a risk a player is. It's whether he can deliver or not. On those terms I'd say its moderately risky signing but yeah, hopefully pays off.

Someone suggested him missing 3 games could decide whether go down or stay up. As if Shelvey is a match-winner or that crucial to the team. There's only a few lads that should even be guaranteed a first team berth - that's down to a lack of quality rather than their own and Shelvey isn't one of them. I think you could see last season how crucial he was to the team when he was out. Has really that much changed in our team or tactics?
