It's something to do with having position and being entitled to shield the ball to an extent, though can't say I can tell the difference sometimes. I think they should start giving free-kicks more often when defenders are blatantly over-doing it shielding the ball out for a goal kick, that does take the piss a bit.

Agree we have more chance of getting Baines but I don't see any evidence whatsoever to suggest he'll become much better than Bridge. If he becomes Bridge's equal at any point in his career then he'll be doing very, very well for himself.

Cannavaro would be absolutely awesome for the development of Taylor. We've banged on about bringing in the likes of Campbell or Hyypia to add experience at the back. Cannavaro would just be an uber-version of this, so I can't see how anyone would object to us getting him. Not that I'm holding my breath, like.

It's entirely possible he doesn't get on with N'Zogbia though, nobody else seems to. Agree entirely with OML and Jan though, I'd much rather this type of signing to compete with Butt than someone like Duscher. He could learn a bit from Butt and there'd be no pressure on him to come in and play well immediately. However he'd know that once he's settled in and playing well he'd have a very good chance of starting regularly on a team that's looking to go places. Could ultimately then become a fixture in our team for years to come, I'd be thrilled if we pursued him.

We could still be after another left back though, as Sam did say he wanted 2 LB's not so long ago. And Young would provide decent depth at RB tbh. I think we've got enough depth there already with Geremi and Solano tbh, he's not needed and would just be a waste. Think I'd like to have a more natural, defensively sound right-back for some of the more physical away games if I'm honest. Reckon we'll be getting one of Young or Fanni for just that reason. I'd prefer Fanni tbh, as we know Young is very limited while Fanni might turn out top drawer. Good post by OML as well, agree entirely.
