Our average league gates with Waddle, Beardsley and Gazza were: 1983/84 - 29,811 1984/85 - 26,228, Waddles last season. 1985/86 - 23,434 1986/87 - 24,750, Beardsleys last season. 1987/88 - 21,038 1988/89 - 22,810, Gascoignes last season. 1989/90 - 21,525 The gates were falling before we sold anybody. Gazza's last season 88/89 pmsl. Mick if yee had any first hand knowledge of the toon in the 80's you would not have forgotten our opening home game of that season. Gazza's home coming with Spurs! If the toon had've been succesful (come 10th say) in 88/89 we'd have averaged 30,000 no problem. We got two 14,000 gates when we had already been relegated, or was it West Ham that put us doon? I remember Lormor's over head kick in the first minute. It's a miracle having been totally fucking shite, that we averaged 23,000, no other club that would come last in the league would've got 23,000. The reason the season before was so low was because the capacity was just over 25,000. Totally flawed points Mick, wor crowds had **** all to do with players leaving, totally ridiculous to suggest that was a reason they left.

I'll repeat again what I said for your information, I mentioned falling attendances before Sky arrived on the scene, were attendances falling or not? Or, are you going to try to change history? Gordon Lee did such a good job at Everton that they sacked him, he went to Preston where they were in such a bad state when he left that they had to be bailed out by directors, he then went to Leicester 6 years after the Preston job for one season, he won nothing during his career other than promotion from the third division twice. I've already said I preferrd the football before Lee came and I'll stand by that, it doesn't mean I prefer mediocrity. Aye but not when we sold Waddle 4fs!!! We were averaging 30,000 then 27,000 which was more than Spurs at the time, and the reason the crowds went down, were because of the fact the players were being sold, and no ambition. The players leaving had FUCK ALL to do with the attendances. When I'm wrong I admit it, and I would like you to admit you're wrong on this subject. Honest mate **** knows where you're doing your research, but just give it a miss.

Whoever said Newcastle's gates weren't big enough to keep Waddle, Gazza and Peter Honest mate that's the most pathetic thing I've ever come across in my entire life. In 1984 we were the third best supported club in the country, in 1985 we were fourth, then we sold Waddle. Some people leave themselves wide open with poorly thought out posts.

I wasn't trying to nit pick, I was trying to find out if you thought that the transfer fee was less than £250k. You've already confirmed what I thought about Goddard which is good. I've also found this about Simpson http://www.talkofthetyne.net/93201.html 1990/91 N.Simpson 1/4 0 Neil came from Aberdeen (£500,000) having been 'kicked out' of Scotland because of "that tackle" on a Rangers player. Durrant had his leg smashed and Neil headed south after death threats. Only made one start. Looked good when he was on the field, but was a bit like Marcelino. Honestly I don't care what that says, I know fine well he was £100,000. Sure Aitken was £500,000 that's where the site editors getting mixed up. I would be very surprised if he'd cost the £500k mentioned, I've seen somewhere that Simpson had to pay £400k in damages to Durrant. Aberdeen fans are scum, to the tune of "who's that team they call United", they still sing, Who's that lying at Pittodrie who's that lying on the floor, it looks like Iain Durrant to me, cos Simmie's gone and fucked his knee, and he won't be playing for Rangers anymore. They sing that to this day, he was defo £100,000 though.

He might be getting confused with David Mills going to WBA for £500k, I thought Trewick was £250k. Who said he wasn't? You said "John Trewick was the record buy for less than half of that." I took that as meaning that he was less than half of £500k. Nit picking.

David Mills £500k WBA  IN 82/83?!??! John Trewick was the record buy for less than half of that. You've made all this up and look like a mug, unless you're reading a ridiculous website which has made them up.

I've never seen a more factually incorrect post as that in all my life. Paul Goddard £800,000 in 1986? John Robertson was briefly our record buy for £750,000 in 1988, so how could Goddard be £800,000? He was definitely £415,000 without a shadow of a doubt, and nearly every other figure you've put down is just wrong, can't be arsed to point them all out. Admit to this forum you made those up then move on.
-
No proof or fuck all but I just know the following so take my word for it. Paul Goddard was signed for £415,000 from West Ham and sold to Derby for £100,000. Billy Whitehurst similarly came in for a club record £250,000. Neil Simpson was £100,000 from Aeerberdeen. Rob McDonald was signed from PSV Eindhoven for £150,000 (how the fuck was he part of a squad that won the European Cup?). David Kelly was bought fae Leicester for £250,000 and sold to Wolves for 3/4 of a million quid. Wayne Fereday £100,000 from QPR. Andy Thomas was definitely £200,000 from Oxford, donno how much he was sold for, canny player as well. 18 Y/o Michael O'Neill came in from Coleraine for £80,000 if memory serves me right. That's all I can remember in all fairness.

In Scandanavian objectively, which British clubs have a bigger following than Newcastle?
-
Aye but for long spells of the year it's always dark. We whinge in the winter because we only get 8 hours daylight, these poor cunts are over the moon if they get one some of the time, which along with the beer prices contributes to the fact that Sweden and Finland have the highest suicide rates in the world.
-
:wullie: :stevieintoon: :bigbro: :winking: Well you all look like Mart Poom, look at Kassu. Am only messing, but I thought Finns were closer to Russia than Swedes and Norwegians, in terms of language and genetics.

Aye and apparently many many geordie words are more or less shared by the Danes, gann, hyem etc...

Reading a few posts on here today has emphasised one thing to me, we have fuckin loads of Scandanavian fans. When we played Lillestrom the other week we had 2,000 fans there, maybe half were Scandanavian Mags. There are a few people on here who believe you should only support your local club, but you to give credit to these Scandanavian toon fans, they could easily support Man Utd, Liverpool or Arsenal, but they support the toon and I think that shows they're not gloryhunters, something about Newcastle appealed to them when they were young and they've stuck by us. Look at Ikon who's from Sweden, he drove 10 hours there and back to see us in Norway, that's dedication. So if 1,000+ toon fans turn out for us over there in the Intertoto Cup, imagine how many would turn out if we say played a European Cup final in Denmark, added to the 50-60,000 English based toon fans, maybe there'd be 10,000+ Scandanavian Mags. Top marks you have my respect The only thing is when we become succesful you loyal Swedes, Danes, Norwegians, and Finns (they're more Russian than Scandanavian?) will be called glory seekers, which won't be fair, because we'll get even more fans.

Only one person in the whole thing with a 100% record :winking:

Aye the K stand at Old Trafford was complete at that time and it still looked decent 30 years later, same with the stand opposite the players tunnel at Hillsborough which hasn't changed in 40 years and I can testify having sat in there, it's still better than some stands even now. http://home.skysports.com/images/stadia/19.jpg

It's an interesting and important subject when done the right way, it can be done without any vitriol, end of the day we all want the same, our name on a bloody trophy, now. It was a good post by Bob, and is obviously what I've been saying for ages and also without vitriol, as I think you'll agree even if some others won't. I think you've highlighted something here ........ I don't want to argue with you on this, but this is fine for people who became old enough to start supporting the club around the time SJH took over, but it doesn't wash with anybody who was supporting the club during those shite times though. That's obviously where we'll differ. You also said......... I don't recall the turnstile price when I first started going to matches in 1968, but I remember my first season ticket cost me £9 for the old stand paddock in 1973. I understand that the club was taking less revenue than they do today, but can you explain to me why that should have placed the club at a disadvantage in comparison to other clubs of that same time period, all of which would have been charging similar admission prices? I have to ask this, but do you think that Newcastle is the only club taking in more money now than it did in those earlier years? No, of course not. All clubs had exactly the same opportunity to generate money. If anything, given our larger potential support, I'd say we had a greater opportunity than some others. The problem is that potential has to be tapped but it wasn't until SJH took over. If other clubs were taking in more money it would have been because they were attracting larger attendances. Why do you think other clubs were attracting larger attendances than Newcastle? I do agree you made some good posts and have said so at times. The way I feel we were at a disadvantage, and I'm going into something that I can't recite chapter and verse here. Is that clubs like Man U, Sheff Wed, Boro, Mackems and others were given grants to develop grounds for the world cup, we didn't get those, I’m sure it was because we didn’t own the ground. If we had of been given grants for the world cup then we wouldn’t have had to spend money on the East Stand, that could have gone on players. I would love to have been able to see the clubs accounts for the 70’s and 80’s to see where our money went. I remember going to Keegans debut and we were supposed to have 36,000 in the ground and people were almost getting crushed, I went to a game a few weeks later and the crowd was given as 34,000’ish and I had plenty of room. A lot of people thought the directors were creaming money from the gate receipts; I have no idea if this was the case, or, that a couple of thousand could make a big difference. Please explain why Liverpool, Leeds, Man City, Arsenal, West Brom, Spurs, Chelsea, QPR, Swindon, Derby and Spurs all won domestic titles and trophies between 1966 and 1973 when the East Stand opened, despite all of them not hosting World Cup ties and receving grants ? Nor sky money Please tell us how much these grants were, as you say they had such a massive impact ? What improvements exactly did these grants have on the smoggies and the mackems grounds other than extra seats, including temporary ones in the Fulwell End at Roker Park, and superior press boxes.. Which I can tell you now, is pretty much all that these grants paid for. Unless one of Grass’ books can prove differently. Please also tell us something which I am sure escapes you completely too. How is it that the mackems and smoggies got allocated World Cup games in the first place ahead of us, only 11 years after we had completed a platform of winning the FA Cup 3 times in 5 years ? Why weren’t we in the top 5 clubs in the country at this time, only a decade later, rather than spending 6 of them in the old 2nd division ? Factual based responses to these factual points would be appreciated. As you will know NE5 St James' was initially given the 1966 World Cup, but because of concerns over safety and the standard of the ground, it was decided to take it off us and give it to Ayresome Park, something that astonishes me, having been to AP in the 90's it was like a step back in time by early 90's standards so fuck knows what it would've been like in 1966.

The same Shearer who was absolutely shocking for the past two years? somehow i think not. Scholes hasnt been pulling up tree's the past few years either really. Still played alot better than Shearer did by a fucking mile. Even Shola played better than Shearer. The point was Scholes is past his best, ok Shearer was further past but they are both still past their best and not good enough. Scholes is still good enough for England. Play him off the striker as a stop gap till Roonaldo returns. Vieira once said Paul Scholes is the best player in the world. I don't know if he was quite that good, but **** me what a player. I don't hate Man Utd like most of you, I respect them, the only two cunts I couldn't stand were Keane and Ferguson, and Paul Scholes was an integral part of what they have become. He never receives the plaudits he deserves, in the same way Cantona does to this day. Technically he's got the lot, and apart from me, he's got the hardest shot I've ever seen. Every time the ball comes to him on the volley he connects beautifully, and volleying the ball with control really is the most difficult thing a footballer can do. Look at that goal he scored on the volley from the corner against Bradford, far farrrrrrrr better goal than Di Canio's v Wimbledon, which won goal of the decade. I'm a big England fan, and yes if Scholes is still fit enough, I'd bring him back in without a doubt, and for the lad that said he's been shite for 6 years I wish Shola or Dyer had been as shite as him over the period.
-
Neither can Scholes. :winking:  Harsh midds

I'm going to do a lot of writing for the site this season. I'll do a piece a week, when the season starts and if they're good feel free to publish them. I'm working on something else for the site at the moment as it happens.

Used to work with a middle aged bloke who was well into this with Aberdeen, they were affiliated (if thats the right word) with Chelsea and they used to pop up every now and again when they used to play Rangers. He helped run a website for casuals in general and used to say that due to the increase of security cameras & the police at games these days the firms/casuals/whatever were starting to attach themselves to lower & non-league teams as it was easier to arrange 'rumbles'. Also, was working with a painter who was one of those Seaham lads who got locked up over the Gremlins?/Seaham knockabout by the ferry, he got done as he didn't delete his text messages from his phone before he got picked up, he went on the sick before going to court and was still getting paid while inside. No disrespect but what your mate has told you is total bollocks, in fact it couldn't be further from the truth. Aberdeen have had a long long standing relationship with the "Yid Army", while Rangers and Chelsea's relationship is probably the strongest cross border firm relationship there is alongside Hibs and Man Utd.

Am in. Some bargains kickin aroond like.
