The goal would have stood had the VAR referee not called Tierney to watch the sequence. Tierney accidentally got it right on the pitch, and was tempted to reconsider. Before we had VAR no such thing as a VAR referee existed, hence VAR is at fault. VAR is not just some screen, it’s technology being used by people to inform their decision making. It’s not lead to better, or more consistent, decision making though.

Shit, that’s Southampton fucked
-
Not really. There are three refs in the VAR boot, right? Let them all make that call and if one says it’s not obvious to them, drop the VAR case before looking into the actual rules.
-
Clear and obvious is quite a useful principle though. E.g. if only one out of five angles supports the potential error theory, it certainly wasn’t clear and obvious. It was introduced to correct obvious things the referee may have missed, not for this level of nitpicking and finding an angle to suit the preferred outcome. just how did we get here, really. As gbandit suggests, no ordinary football fan would look at that passage of play yesterday and suggest it was a clear and obvious case of offside that the referee and linesman somehow missed.

Interesting question. Probably in that case they would have ruled Longstaff didn’t interfere with play. Just goes to show how fucked up these rules nowadays are

Another aspect to it is that I think most people can stomach an honest human (referee) mistake much easier than an inexplicable VAR call where you need five angles and a large amount of subjectivity to still not have a “clear and obvious” error that needs overturning. Between Isak’s Liverpool goal, the Crystal Palace push, Joelinton’s supposed handling of the ball vs Leicester, the Man U final offside decision and now this goal chalked off for bullshit reasons, that’s at least five curious decisions involving only us this season, that I would challenge being “correct” even if according to Kaizero’s stats they undoubtedly are counted as such. The bottom line is that goals and penalty decisions now seem much more subjective than they ever were before. If VAR was used to correct clear errors from the officials on the pitch, such as missing a clear offside or a horror tackle, nobody would object. It is however being used selectively and subjectively to influence the outcome of games. I was critical when it was introduced and told it would improve, but it hasn’t. It needs to go, simple as.

VAR was supposed to correct clear and obvious errors, wasn’t it? It’s more like find any excuse possible to chalk off a goal for a non “top six” side/allow for them. Absolutely disgusted at that call. Not even interested in how it could be explained. It’s horse poo that VAR steps in to get that disallowed.

Thank God we got the three points in the end. I was just about completely done with this corrupt game.

Very mixed feelings. Should have had a pen against, great goal, should have been 2 goals up. Hopefully we can hang on to the points here
