From SkySports.com Meanwhile, Newcastle are being strongly linked with a move for Croatia star Luka Modric. Modric is one of the most sought-after players in Europe with the likes of Chelsea, Liverpool, Tottenham and Barcelona all credited with an interest in the Dinamo Zagreb schemer. However, reports suggest Newcastle have stolen a march on their rivals by inviting Modric to Tyneside for talks and a visit to the club's training ground. Modric is believed to have met with football executive director Dennis Wise and head of player recruitment Tony Jimenez with Newcastle thought to be ready to pay £20million. nothng new but people have been waiting for it to get there

That's where I think he'll play, I can't see him moving Owen unless he goes to him and says he doesn't want to play there but judging from comments from him he seems happy with his new role in the team. One thing Modric will give our midfield is better ball retention compared to the other lot, when Keegan spoke about Owen playing deeper he mentioned how he hardly gave the ball away so I think it's something he's looking for in his midfield, I can see Keegan going for another midfielder even if he does get Modric to play on the other side and if it's a player of similar quality then the quality of our football can only improve. Fair play to the club if they pull it off. Aye would be very interesting to see how much more KK wants to improve the midfield. I'd be tempted to look for a DM to replace Butt, however there's a big chance he will revert Barton to DM (after his comment) and sign another AM. I get the feeling he would rather sign more attacking players than defensive ones............ which won't upset me. KK already said he is looking for a new DM

If he has already agreed to sign you would hope that he sticks to his word and doesnt pull out if he hasnt officially signed before Euro 2008 and a bigger club come in

Chelsea fans opinion To be honest I'm not sure who actually signs the players at Chelsea. Is it Avram, Roman, Arnesen, Kenyon... who really knows? Whoever it is, they need to get their rump in gear, because it looks like Newcastle are very close to signing long time Chelsea target wee Luka Modric. Many see Modric as the only possible replacement for Lampard, who with every passing day, looks more and more likely to leave The Bridge in the summer. If Lampard does go and Modric doesn't come in, you'd have to worry about the creativity of the 2008/2009 Chelsea midfield. There's already about 1058 defensive midfielders on the Blues books, and if the rumours are to be believed Gareth Barry is set to become the 1059th. Modric would surely be a better option. However it's all looking too late. Dinamo Zagreb vice-chairman Zdravko Mamic jetted into Tyneside's Jimmy Nail International on Tuesday and met Toon officials in a hotel (I'm guessing a Travelodge) to discuss a £12million move. And who's been key to securing this deal? A certain Chelsea legend named Dennis Wise. Reports in the papers this morning are suggest Modric has even hosted a farewell dinner party with Dinamo pals to toast the transfer. Disaster...

LUKA Modric is close to becoming a £20m-plus record signing for Newcastle United. And should the megabucks deal for the left-sided playmaker go through, it is almost certain to spell the end for Charles N'Zogbia's St James's Park career. Modric this week made a top-secret visit to the club's training ground with a view to a summer move to St James's Park. Kevin Keegan hopes to make the Dinamo Zagreb midfielder the first permanent signing of his second spell as Newcastle manager. Modric and Zdravko Mamic, vice-chairman of Dinamo, flew to Tyneside on Tuesday for talks with club officials, including technical director (football) Dennis Wise and Tony Jimenez, and Tyneside-based agent Peter Harrison. The 22-year-old has been tracked by top four sides Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool in recent seasons. But United look to have a stolen a march by making an early move to the highly-rated 22-year-old, who is keen to seal a move away from Zagreb before he takes part in the summer's European Championships. Keegan is yet to bring a senior player to St James's Park on a permanent deal, with defender Lamine Diatta – signed initially until the end of the season – the only incoming player since he returned. And Modric – who started his career with Bosnian side Zrinjski Mostar – fits the bill for Keegan. He is looking for players to light up St James's Park, and Modric – who has struck three times for his country – has long been coveted by clubs in Spain and England. However, Modric – who started for Croatia in both of their qualifying victories over England – will not be cheap, and the reported fee would make him the most expensive signings in the club's history, ahead of previous record signings Michael Owen and Alan Shearer. And his wage demands could yet prove a stumbling block to any deal. Meanwhile, Keegan is understood to be ready to let unsettled N'Zogbia – who has not even made the bench for the last four games – leave in the summer.
