  6. ⭐☆☆☆☆ “Wish I’d Stayed on the Train” Visited Sunderland last weekend. Big mistake. The city looks like it lost a war with time — Dog shit, shuttered shops, and the ever-present smell of fryer oil & Joop. Locals were friendly in the way wolves are friendly to sheep: loud, circling, chanting something about football while staring into your soul. I think it was supposed to be conversation, but it felt more like a tribal interrogation by grey toothed neanderthals Tried the local delicacy: cheesy chips. Imagine cardboard dipped in yellow nuclear glue. Ate half, blacked out, woke up being stared at by mutant seagulls the size of Labradors. Nightlife was… prime evil. Entered a pub. Within five minutes, someone sang something about hating Zebras, 2 men fighting over the domino table & someone weeping openly into their pint of Double Maxim Marra, Unsure if it was a ritual or just Saturday night after another home loss. Left at dawn next morning, passing locals whispering in a language I’m glad I didn’t understand. Train couldn’t come fast enough. Verdict: One star. Chips were warm.
  7. Sunderland: Neon Graveyard on the North Sea Imagine a city that once dreamed of industry, only to wake up decades later as a rusting corpse by the sea. Welcome to Sunderland — a concrete labyrinth where broken neon flickers against rain-slicked pavements, and every street corner feels like the opening shot of a dystopian B-movie. The skyline jagged with derelict towers and skeletal cranes, relics of a shipbuilding empire that collapsed under the weight of its own obsolescence. The air tastes of salt, diesel fumes, and fryer oil — an unholy perfume clinging to your clothes long after you’ve fled. Food culture? Forget it. Here, the sacred offering is cheesy chips: a styrofoam altar of soggy fries drowning in radioactive-orange goo, handed to you by a vendor who looks like they’ve seen too much. In this city, dairy product substitutes are currency, and vinegar doubles as holy water. The nightlife resembles a failed experiment in crowd control. Pubs throb with drunken chants, the soundscape a primitive chorus echoing through cracked windows and broken teeth. Football is religion; the stadium is a cathedral; and the faithful roar like Neanderthals at the altar of defeat. Step inside one of these watering holes and you’ll swear you’ve stumbled into an evolutionary cul-de-sac preserved in cheap lager. Sunderland doesn’t care if you hate it. It doesn’t want to be loved. It’s a place that dares you to survive it — to wander its decaying streets under the sodium glow of streetlamps that hum like dying insects. And if you make it out alive, your prize is a lingering sense of despair… and the faint aftertaste of congealed cheddar. The apocalypse already happened here. The rest of us are just catching up. Verdict: Come for the irony, stay for the chips. 1/10 would not recommend
