Alves on his way to the Prem?

Recommended Posts

Elano is hoping Manchester City can sign Afonso Alves, but Tord Grip admits a deal for the Heerenveen striker is at a 'standstill'.

Alves is a leading target for City, with recent reports in Holland claiming a big-money deal had already been agreed for January.

Heerenveen denied those suggestions, but City's first-team coach Grip has hinted that talks have taken place.

However, Grip has acknowledged that a potential New Year transfer has reached an impasse, saying in the Daily Mirror: "The deal is at a standstill."

The issue concerns Alves' eligibility for a work permit, with the Brazilian hit-man yet to reach double figures in international appearances.

He is currently with the Brazil squad for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Peru and Uruguay, and is training alongside City playmaker Elano.

The summer signing from Shakhtar Donetsk has discussed Alves with City boss Sven Goran Eriksson, but also expressed concerns about whether the player would secure the necessary paperwork to play in the Premier League.

Elano told Brazilian TV: "I have talked with coach Sven Goran Eriksson about him.

"Alves seems to have a problem with his passport, but I hope that he comes to the United Kingdom."
