Thigh muscle tear for Owen, out for a month+

Not sure whether it has been mentioned in this thread (although there is another thread devoted to the issue of Vogts calling the squad in early) yet as I haven't read it all but, just as Owen is being forced to sit it out with his current injury Berti Vogts has announced that he is calling his Nigerian squad together 2 weeks ahead of the African Cup of Nations meaning that Martins will be away from 4th Jan.

That doesn't leave very much margin for Owen to recover and regain any fitness before he is needed for first team action again.

UNLESS - we sign someone early in the transfer window.

Newcastle could receive up to £100,000 per week in compensation during the period their striker Michael Owen is out with injury.

Owen suffered a thigh strain during England's 1-0 win over Austria last Friday that will rule him out of action for about four weeks.

The Football Association said its insurance policy would cover the costs.

"This figure can be up to £100,000 a week but it is not the FA who pay this money out," said an FA spokesman.

Newcastle were embroiled in a war of words with the FA over compensation during Owen's almost season-long absence after he sustained knee ligament damage during the 2006 World Cup.

The Magpies eventually received £6m from the FA, world football governing body Fifa and their insurer.

If the africans want to put their competition in the middle of the season, they should pay the wages of the players while they are on international duty. Also, the organizers should make sure player's insurance is adequate.

They should move Africa to a different part of the world so they can play it in June every time.

Yes of course we should. Owen is injured when playing for England, not for NUFC. Even if NUFC will receive £100,000 per week, I say it's not enough IF Owen wage apparently is more than that (say £110,000 or something).
