Graham Poll: Encroaching on pens

Recommended Posts

What i hate isn't encroaching on pens, but dummying them, or halting run ups.

I agree. It's fucking cheating. Keane does it all the time.

I was always under the impression that it was a 'clean' run up and strike at goal.

As i said, it always used to be but seems to be ignored.

John Aldridge started it.

I was just going to mention Aldridge when I saw your next post.

Did they go through ashort period of banning him from doing this ?

I think there was much talk about it, but don't know if it actually happened.

Talking of cheating, see also the tendency of some keepers to be about 6 feet off their line when the kick is taken. These are simple rules which seem to get ignored an awful lot nowadays.

I hate the way some keepers come so far off their line now for penalty's

That's why reina is good at saving them. He takes about 3 steps forward to narrow the angle down.

It was noted after the epic shootout between England and the Netherlands in the U21s Euros this year that there had been one great example of refereeing consistency throughout the game. In the shootout, the keepers were off their lines when all 22(?) penalties were taken, and not once was anything done about it.

I fear its not picked up on for the reasons similar to technology being introduced. I think they know it will take too long to have to re-take penalties about 5 times until the keeper stops coming forward.

its like trying to get a defensive wall at a free kick to actually stay 10 yards from the ball. Why refs' dont just say to them, "move 1 inch forward and your all booked" I just dont know.

There was a season approx 1990 - 91 that pens were being re-taken if the player dummied in his run up but it (the ban) seemed to disappear a couple of seasons later like a lot of clamp downs ala keepers and six seconds etc.

Its not difficult when your dealing with a single player (or two if both keepers do it in a shootout).  The first time he does it you call for the retake and say "next time you step off your line your off the pitch".  The sub keeper can take over if neccesary.

Its impossible to do that with a wall of players at a freekick, because if they don't listen and get sent off the match ends automatically :)
