"The ultimate one that got away for NUFC"

Time has flown by for Kris Thackray these past few weeks. In August, he was a student who enjoyed an enthusiastic kickabout with his college team; today, he is in Italy preparing to play among the august legions of Italy’s Serie A.

Thackray’s story appears to be the ultimate “one that got away” for Newcastle United, a team not exactly bristling with irresistible talent. For Thackray, 18, was on their books before getting the boot two years ago.

However, the lad from the village of Oulton, near Chester-le-Street, scored a goal in the summer that could transform him into a rarity: an English name on a Serie A teamsheet.

Playing for England Colleges in Naples, Thackray scored a cracker, good enough to have a scout from Reggina ask him to stay on for a trial. Within weeks, he had signed a two-year contract and he is in Reggio Calabria in training for a possible debut in the new year among Italy’s footballing glitterati.

this reminds me of when Ronnie O'Brien (boro youth reject) got snapped up by Juventus. dunno what he's up to now though.

Yeah, I remember reading in the Sunday Sun once that he played in a midfield in the Intertoto Cup alongside Davids, Conte & Henry on the wing.

"The ultimate one that got away for NUFC" was Bobby Robson post Keegan.

Would have had the exact same problems as Kenny in that he'd have still had to sell his stars.

Agree...

The ultimate one that got away for NUFC was not bringing in Mourinho when we had the chance when Robson did eventually take over tbh.

Maybe.

Its true Sir Bobby Robson offered Jose Mourinho a job as assistent (before he became a full time manager at Benfica, Porto Chelsea) and promised him he would nurture him to be his successor.

However Jose did not want to wait to be a full time manager so waited a few mouths and took managers jobs at Benfica then Porto and the rest is history...

Jose Mourinho would of been a fitting replacement for the great Sir Bobby Robson
