Memories from the 70s, 80s, 90s

Recommended Posts

During our good years, that ugly tosspot at Aston Villa, Lee Hendrie, tried to get Ginola sent off by throwing himself to the ground as if he was hit - feigning badly, but the commentator went on as if he had been - even when replay showed he HADN'T - then he did exactly the same again with Gary Speed a year later, rolling around as if Speed had hit him (which he hadn't) was there any condemnation of this play-acting-to-get-somone sent off Gargoyle in media or rags ?

Nope.

Nothing ever changes as regards us !

80 ish as a guess. i can remember it pre metro. i can remember them building it, but not sure of dates.

Not entirely sure but I thought the metro work started in the 70's.

Metro work started in 78, I believe. The old rail was still running to Tynemouth via old Heaton station in 1979.

A little snippet - ever wondered (of course you haven't) when running in to SJP station, at the big blank concreted walls to the other side of each platform ?

Well, they were initially both supposed to be island platforms, and they were both supposed to run to the west end. Elswick, Benwell Fenham, etc

But the Tories came to power under Thatcher and stopped ALL expansions. The only ones to go ahead, YEARS after they were supposed to - were Airport, and then Sunderland - and that nowhere near the original route planned, which included Washington, Leam Lane, Southwick, etc. on old BR lines.

Announcing the decision to charge the pair, the FA's Claire Tomlinson said: "It is clear both players have a case to answer." Asprilla and Curle have 14 days in which to answer the charges.

Well I never knew that.

Wasn't she caught with a broken limbed ex Smoggie manager,in a hotel room?

Yes, allegedly.

Didn't know that - while checking this, I noticed the odd hand motion of Robson's pic - sums him up, i'd say !

(yeah, i know he's holding the edge of the bag, but what does it look like ?)

Should really bring back The Clap Clap song from the 80s for half time. For the younger members of the forum, it was a very catchy instrumental song played every home game as half time entertainment.

OK, This one is really old, going back to the fairs cup in 69 or thereabouts.

My father was a sergeant in the police at Gateshead when the police station was just off old west street behind the old town hall. In amongst the back lanes around there, the police had their scial club. My father was the secretary of the social club and whenever they organised dinner dances, social nights, charity events etc, Dad always managed to get representatives from NUFC and subsequently formed a long standing friendship with Willie McFaul.

One year, I think it was ariound the 69 period, the police had an indoor games night against NUFC and Dad took me along. Imagine my delight to see all my heroes there. Wyn Davies playing a very concentrated game dominoes, Pop Robson, a demon with the darts and Bobby Moncur, an ace of the billiards table. The players were brilliant and I sat next to big Wyn for what seems like hours. He was terrific to me.

I still keep in contact with Willie McFaul and his wife Eileen. Up until last year, he was coaching in NI but Roeder brought him to Norwich as a scout for the midlands and the south. They are living in Essex with his son, Stephen, looking for a house of their own. By the way, McFaul is a top bloke, a really nice man and did so much for under priveledged familiies in the NE for so many years.

Yeah something like that. Was insanely catchy and much better than the hit the bar stuff they wheel out these days.

i think the name of the band was something like claxons, but i cant find it on You tube. That and police dogs Biting people were the only half time entertainment.

Ha, yes I do recall a cops dog grabbing someone on the leg during a 'jump through hoops' demonstration at half time once at Molineux.

do you not remember the 'Display'. A bloke running across the pitch in a padded suit, when he got half way they would let a dog loose and it would catch him and raggle him to the ground, more 70s i think.

haha i used to love that song,  that would get played and there'd be thousands of people doing a little jig/dance all over the ground.

can remember dancing to it in the relegation season, was the only chance we got to clap.

they played it every match for about 20 years.

i thought that as well, but i think the photo maybe too early. it was dated 1971 on th esite i found it, but it could be any date between 71-78. I think the metro opened in 80-81?

The photograph is later than 1971 or we wouldn't have had the East Stand which was finished in 1973.  My guess is that it's between 1975 and 1980 but I couldn't do better than that, St James Hall was knocked down after 1975.

Here's a photograph of St James Hall which was replaced by the Metro.
