My father had it as well as my uncle (living in Africa can do this to you). It can go below detectable levels but once you have it you are prohibited from giving blood and things like that.

 

Our medical staff may have notced his blood hematocrit (the amount of red blod cells you have) being below normal (or even average) and decided that his fitness would naturally be poor and not reach the levels required for a professional athelete.

 

Makes sense. You work out a lot (especially cardio-vascular) you should have a lot if red blood cells. And if you don't well there is genetics, malaria and just being not fit.
