I know Greenalls was part of the kit itself, but the star is surely a patch?

Seem to remember that there were several versions of this shirt released.  When it first came out it was sponsorless, then it was available with Greenalls sponsor which was incorporated on the shirt as part of the overall design.  Then the sponsor changed to Newcastle Breweries and you could get a patch from the club shop at SJP which was basically a black bar to cover the Greenalls sponsorship, with the blue star in the middle.  The next version to be available was the one in your photo. The final version was in 1992-93 and had the blue star incorporated as part of the overall design of the shirt.

Remember getting the blue star patch to cover my Greenalls shirt.  My Mam kindly stitched it on for me, but I'd removed it within a fortnight because it just looked shit.

Ahhh, very interesting. I knew about the replacement patch because you often see them for sale with the black patch and the star in front of it. I never knew about the version with the star incorperated though.

Shirt with star as part of design here's a link to the final version of the shirt on Ebay.  Probably the best version of it to go on general sale.  The shirt was quite often also match worn with McEwan's Lager as the sponsor (mostly away), but I don't think that version was ever released on general sale.

It's a thing of beauty like, like you say definitely the best version of it. Great condition as well.

This or we riot.

Retro Nufc had it up for sale at 6pm.

Had it in my basket, debated whether it's worth £350 (it is), now sold out. Where's the toaster.

The NUFC 95/97 home shirt I bought from eBay the other week arrived and stunk of tabs and collar was yellowed. Wasn't so fussed about the collar as after a few delicate washes and bleaching with some peroxide I got it bright white again and a few more washes to get rid of the smell.

Out of curiosity ended up emailing Classic Football Shirts how much they'd pay for it and they offered me £100 or £150 store credit. Took the credit and bagged an Asprilla #11 home shirt thats out for delivery today.

Returning. Shirt is an original and in great condition but it’s a fake nameset. Bastards.

Is it vinyl?

Nah it’s the felt and double layered but can’t tell straight away that it’s not right.

The letters are smaller, thinner and more compact than the original name sets from the 90s. The Asprilla and 11 are both brand spanking new and pearly white. No aging whatsoever, clearly purchased from a third-party site and recently printed on the shirt. Sickener like as the shirt is in absolutely incredible condition.

There are definitely different versions of the namest that were applied at the club shop but the fact it looks brand new is a dead giveaway.

CFS really need to be transparent about this. They know fine well they aren't legit but they don't disclose.

Same happened to me with an Albert shirt, I trusted CFS but that trust has gone now.

Have you got an original with original lettering @Harry 209 that I can compare against before I send it back? It’s packed away just want to be doubly sure. [emoji38]

I can show you original Ginola nameset if that helps?

That's his actual shirt from the charity shield:

this is a shirt printed at the club shop in 1996:

So there's a difference there so it's difficult to know what's legit and what's not.

For me, the fact that they had a few different shirts with exactly the same pristine printing is a major red flag. I also know that they 100% sell vintage shirts with contemporary printing on them.

So I think you should send that back.

Aye I packed it up as soon as it failed the eye test and before I even started googling original name sets.

First time I’ve used CFS so was assumed they had done their research before flogging it.

How did you go about whitening the collar?

The star looks absolutely amazing when it's in the fabric of the shirt and you can see the jacquard pattern. I hadn't noticed that before

Sprayed the collar with Sainsbury’s home made stain remover and let it soak for about 20 mins. Then made a paste from The Pink Stuffs oxi powder remover (specifically designed for whites), a little baking soda and a sachet of Dr Beckmanns whitening powder. Combined the three with a little warm water until it was a thick paste and rubbed it in with a toothbrush. Let that soak for about 1hr then gave it a delicate wash with a scoop of The Pink Stuffs white stain remover. After 1 wash it was 90% gone.

Gave it another wash with the same white stain remover the next day and the collar was basically back to normal.

Both washes were 20degrees 1 hour each.

already had all the whitening powders and stain removers thankfully so just had to buy the baking soda and toothbrush!

For reference the stains that it removed were the yellowing from cigarettes so not sure if it’d work on actual food stains or anything like.
