I know Greenalls was part of the kit itself, but the star is surely a patch?

Seem to remember that there were several versions of this shirt released.  When it first came out it was sponsorless, then it was available with Greenalls sponsor which was incorporated on the shirt as part of the overall design.  Then the sponsor changed to Newcastle Breweries and you could get a patch from the club shop at SJP which was basically a black bar to cover the Greenalls sponsorship, with the blue star in the middle.  The next version to be available was the one in your photo. The final version was in 1992-93 and had the blue star incorporated as part of the overall design of the shirt.

Remember getting the blue star patch to cover my Greenalls shirt.  My Mam kindly stitched it on for me, but I'd removed it within a fortnight because it just looked shit.

Ahhh, very interesting. I knew about the replacement patch because you often see them for sale with the black patch and the star in front of it. I never knew about the version with the star incorperated though.

Shirt with star as part of design here's a link to the final version of the shirt on Ebay.  Probably the best version of it to go on general sale.  The shirt was quite often also match worn with McEwan's Lager as the sponsor (mostly away), but I don't think that version was ever released on general sale.

It's a thing of beauty like, like you say definitely the best version of it. Great condition as well.

This or we riot.

Retro Nufc had it up for sale at 6pm.

Had it in my basket, debated whether it's worth £350 (it is), now sold out. Where's the toaster.
