Keegan and John Hall times were quite like this, we were always being linked to this player or that player. It was brilliant, I can only remember sulking for about a month when Keegan sold Cole, I think it hurt more because it was to Man Utd, I was livid.

Then, when we signed Les Ferdinand, he ended being just as great and all was forgotten. It was us that set all the British transfer records, Cole to Utd was a record, then Shearer to us also a record.

Then not long after, transfers just went mental. But it feels like it's going full circle, I never, ever, thought I'd be able to relive my football youth , I thought it was over, I get to feel it all again, only this time probably see a trophy, and my daughter enjoy it also.

Funny how things eventually work out.

?

I seem to recall that we signed Warren Barton for what at the time was a world record fee for a defender.....[emoji38]

Seen he’s been linked on the BBC gossip page with some big clubs this morning.

Celtic and Denmark Under-21 midfielder Matt O'Riley, 21, is attracting attention from Borussia Dortmund, Liverpool, Arsenal and Manchester United. (ESPN)

He'd save on moving expenses if he signed with us. Got to be a factor.

No surprise really - but it is a shame. Though Eddie knows best I guess. Clearly had priority to strengthen other positions.

Says on there there we see Bruno playing more advanced so didn’t need him, really expecting a quality DM to come in before the window closes now.

Yes. I personally expected Bruno to primarily be the DLP this season but that would suggest a DM is on the cards now.

Yeah exactly. They didn't want to spend £50m or whatever it would be on someone to play the position they want Bruno to play. Makes sense tbf.

A quality DM would be amazing. Rules out Gallagher you'd assume?

Yeah not sure how Gallagher would fit in, unless of course he’s back up if we can’t get a DM and then Bruno will fill that role for the time being?

Aye, definitely suggests more of a pure DM. Touched on it in the Isak thread but as good as Joelinton is, he needs to start adding something in the opposition box in this case. No excuses or reasons he shouldn't be able to either.

It's a strange one like. I was saying at the start of the window that so much depended on what Howe saw Bruno's long-term role as. Whether we'd go for an AM and keep Bruno deep, or go for a dedicated DM and keep Bruno more advanced.

It seems like we've gone from one approach to the other, but even when we were looking for an AM, Paqueta wasn't in the equation.

FWIW, I think it's a good way to go. Playing Bruno more advanced seems to make him much more useful.

I do hope it was a scouting reason like, as in he just wouldn't have fit, is seen as too risky, or that they've spotted a few things which 'worry' them ect. West Ham are paying a lot but if he's anything close to the player he seems like to us common folk then he'll be worth every penny.

I’ll take Ryder’s comments with the a pinch of salt but if this means Bruno is pushed further forward with a specialist 6 signed then that works for me. @Optimistic Nut hit it for me, we really need to see more of Big Joe in attack, more of how he did versus Forest and City in terms of pushing on and contributing with some goals.
