In Dyer needJan 27 2007

Michael Owen has engaged the services of Kieron Dyer's personal trainer in an attempt to increase his chances of tasting Premiership action for Newcastle before the end of this season.

And with Glenn Roeder insisting there is `light at the end of the tunnel' for the recovering striker, Owen's confidence is growing as he closes in on his long-awaited comeback.

The 27-year-old is making encouraging progress in his rehabilitation following career-saving surgery last summer and, while it is a serious knee injury that has prevented him pulling on a United shirt this season, Owen is taking the opportunity to address another long-standing problem.

A player who has a history of hamstring trouble has noted how Dyer looks to have finally put his problems behind him in recent weeks. And the England international has followed in his team-mate's footsteps in an attempt to consign his own chequered fitness record to the past.

"With this break for his knee injury, we are trying to strengthen Michael's hamstrings too," said Roeder, who is confident that Newcastle supporters will see Owen in action this season.

"He has had problems with the right hamstring for years, ever since his Liverpool days, and, while his knee is being properly attended to, he wants to spent the next couple of months focusing on his hamstrings too.

"He has seen how Kieron can now accelerate without a second of doubt. It is a case of `bang' and off he goes. He wants to get back to that level, whereby he feels that `bang', and he can go without worrying, like it was when he was a kid before the first few hamstring problems.

"Michael is doing three days a week with the same personal trainer as Kieron had. He can see the light at the end of the tunnel and the light is growing every week.

"He's working fantastically hard and it will be great to get him back this season."

Owen this week travelled to Bristol for a consultation with a leading specialist and, having undergone a major operation at the Colorado clinic of Dr Richard Steadman to repair the knee that was shattered during last summer's World Cup finals in Germany, he has been told that his recovery is going to plan.

"Every step is a forward step," said Roeder, who has been able to select Owen just once during his 12 months in charge at St James's Park.

"I have got a target written up in my office for him. Michael wants to play this season and that target is keeping him going.

"If that is what he wants, there's no way that I'm going to discourage him or advise him otherwise. It is down to how he feels."

Owen could have worse role models that Dyer, who has shown no signs of suffering a recurrence of familiar troubles since making his latest comeback.

The in-form midfielder's progress has been monitored closely by the England coach Steve McClaren, who was thrilled by his performance in Newcastle's 3-2 win at Tottenham two weeks ago.

Dyer is expected to be named in the England squad for next month's friendly against Spain at Old Trafford.

Meanwhile, former Magpies defender Stuart Pearce says he will not risk losing his day job to become England Under-21 coach, but the Manchester City boss believes the role could only help his work at Eastlands.

Having identified Pearce as their number one choice to succeed Peter Taylor, who confirmed his resignation on Thursday, Football Association chiefs, led by Sir Trevor Brooking, are feverishly trying to ease fears among the City hierarchy about the potential for distraction in combining two highly pressurised jobs.

And Pearce said: "I feel anybody who works with the under-21s would get a benefit in their club job."

Latest injuries:

Emre blow

Jan 27 2007

By Alan Oliver, The Evening Chronicle

Emre is out of Newcastle United's game with Aston Villa at St James' Park on Wednesday night in the latest injury setback for manager Glenn Roeder.

Roeder is not expecting to see the little midfielder back in a black-and-white shirt for another couple of weeks because of his calf injury, while Celestine Babayaro continues to drag his feet following his hamstring injury and a bout of flu.

But there was better news for Roeder regarding Damien Duff and Titus Bramble, who both came through a full-scale practice match at United's training ground yesterday to put themselves in contention for Wednesday night.

The pair both played 80 minutes, while Stephen Carr - who returned against West Ham last Saturday after his long lay-off with a foot injury - topped up his fitness, with Steven Taylor also getting a good work-out after serving his one-match suspension against the Hammers.

In my view, Emre has been terrific this season and so committed to United, but the Turkish international's situation has to be of increasing concern for Roeder, with the 26-year-old suffering from a calf problem and struggling to come to terms with the FA racism charge - which he is denying - hanging over him.

Before the West Ham game I said the longer Emre is out the harder it will be for him to return after he was "knocked sideways" by the racist allegations, and this remains the case.

Roeder said today: "Emre's on the treatment table, and I don't expect him back for a couple of weeks."

Babayaro and Craig Moore will return to training on Monday, but the Villa game will come too soon for the two defenders.

However, Antoine Sibierski is ready to return after missing the West Ham game through concussion.

Meanwhile, long-term absentees Shola Ameobi and Michael Owen are making good progress from their respective hip and knee injuries.

"Shola's had fantastic news from his surgeon regarding his hip," added Roeder.

"He's got good movement now, and is making good progress. He tells me he cannot remember the last time he had no pain in his hip, but he hasn't now.

"But while he is feeling great to be back around the training ground, we are still not expecting him to play again for us this season. In his absence, I think people are now realising how much Shola has done for this club.

"For the last 18 months he's put his career on the line for Newcastle United.

"And Michael's working like a Trojan in a bid to get fit and is focusing on playing again this season.

"Both Shola and Michael deserve to be fit as soon as possible."

Midfielder Charles N'Zogbia is still four to six weeks away from a return from the knee injury he suffered in the Premiership defeat by Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in December, while the groin injury which saw Shay Given limp off against West Ham will keep the keeper out for the minimum of a month.

Peter Ramage is expected back slightly earlier after his hamstring problems.

Young keeper Tim Krul has had another cartilage operation and United are not putting any date on his return.

yeah it will be great to see owen back - he is one of the best goalscorers in the league

but come april time if we have no chance of getting into europe and no chance of being dragged into a nervous relegation battle, in other words sruck in the middle of the league.

If that is the case I would prefer owen to just sit the rest of the season out to make extra sure he is 100% physically right, then he can come back in pre-season and be totally fresh and raring to go for the new campaign.

I'd agree with that, no point in bringing him back too early if we're playing for nothing.
