Middlesbrough have laughed off claims that they are in talks with Freddie Shepherd about a possible take-over.

Shepherd has just sold his controlling interest in Newcastle and rumours swept the North East suggesting he was considering mounting a bid for Boro.

However, chief executive Keith Lamb was quick to pour cold water on any suggestions that owner and chairman Steve Gibson was looking to sell.

"Absolute rubbish," Lamb told the Evening Gazette.

"Middlesbrough FC belongs to the town and we are just the current custodians.

"At the end of the day I hope we can hand it over in a better state than when we took it on."
