NSG
Chronicle: CARLISLE United will turn to Newcastle United coach Lee Clark if they do not take the League Division One by storm in the next couple of weeks. The Cumbrian outfit shocked football on Monday when they sacked one of Clark’s former United colleagues Neil McDonald after just one game. Carlisle quickly installed McDonald’s assistant Greg Abbott into a caretaker role, but he is under no illusions that he has got to get results at Brunton Park. If not, Carlisle will be looking for a new manager – and Clark will be at the top of their list. As revealed in the Chronicle on July 21, Clark’s former Fulham colleague and boss Chris Coleman is keen to get him across to Spain with a coaching role at Real Sociedad. “Cookie” has his long-time No 2 Steve Kean at his shoulder in San Sebastian and he has promised club officials he will give the rest of his coaching staff a chance. But I understand Coleman is now putting pressure on Clark to join him in Spain. It’s a difficult decision for Clark, who has impressed Graeme Souness, Glenn Roeder and now Sam Allardyce in the way he does his job as United reserve-team coach. And he feels that United can go places under big Sam. But the former United midfielder has made no secret of his desire to take over the hot seat at St James’ Park, and he probably accepts that if he is to achieve this ambition he will have to leave his beloved black-and-whites again and make a success of a managerial job elsewhere.
