Few days before England played Germany in the World Cup last year I dreamt we beat them 2-0. Except Xavi scored the first playing for England but whilst wearing a Spain kit. Whole stadium, England players and Xavi all celebrated as if everything was just fine.

Liked that about Martins, we didn't get caught up with keeping it vacant. He wanted it so we just gave it to him.

Should do the same again. Next player who comes in and wants it should get it. If Best wants a change even, would be happy for him to get it.

Until a class striker comes in who can score 20+ goals a season then they should just retire it.

Yeap, yeap certainly. As I said, probably naive and idealistic to expect any different given what West Ham have been willing to offer him.

A little gutted about this.

Maybe a little naive given how things have turned out but would really have hoped club and player would have found a way for him to stay one more season.

30 Goals in 85 appearances, seems to me getting rid of a 1 in 3ish midfielder who is a known leader might not be the best decision we've ever made. At 28 he could have gone on for another couple of seasons for us comfortably.

I remember that moment so well... Out of nothing this situation arose where the ball was played into space for one of our players to run towards and shoot. Suddenly time slowed down as you realised that this was a fantastic chance and then you realised it was Smith that had made this great run into the box. Oh my god, this is it! He might actually fucking score, holy crap...

The fee was very much circumstantial, definitely. But I won't be disappointed to see it thrown in his face any time he messes up.
