What point is that supposed to be making and how is it true? You can hardly count the first involvements of either player as a "season in the top league" but anyway by that measure it's more like Shearer 5 and Carroll 4. 5 each as members of the first team. Similarities.

Carroll is even more worthy of blame because he knew very well what the board were like and what they were capable with regards to ripping the team apart. Carroll was going to be getting increased wage in time. Could easily have waited until the Summer if that was his primary motivation.

Shearer's legacy will be romanticised in the aftermath of Carroll leaving. But the comparison doesn't completely stick. Newcastle were one of the best teams in the country, favourites to finish in the top 2. He was going to be getting big money anywhere, and I'm sure he commanded big money any time he renegotiated his contract.

Like I said, brand value. There is a cultural glass ceiling at the top of the Premiership that is far more resilient than any gap in financial capabilities. Due to the fact that we acted like fucking idiots precisely at the moment when it was being defined, we're firmly on the wrong side of it.
