Yeah he was ahead of play (and ball) and jumped back as the ball was played behind him.

Just seen some of the Chelsea goals, Anelka's second was a rare example of offside from a pass going backwards. Was it mentioned during the broadcast?

Ironically that's what the transfer window has done to a lot of teams. All the big moves used to be made well before the season started and you'd see all the new boys on the first day. Now we have everyone holding out on each other meaning we have to wait until we are 3-4 games into the season before team defining moves are made.
