Shelvey wasn't fit was he ? or am I just stupid but how is this even a discussion? he's a tampax player

    Again, played yesterday.

  2. People continue to miss the point re: shelvey. The point is we need a squad, with options who we know can contribute at PL level. Shelvey was that, as recently as our great run last season. We’ve made a money move to get rid, fine; but it’s a gamble and now we have to pay for that gamble by relying on crap players. I therefore conclude it wasn’t an intelligent gamble in all the circumstances.

    It’s really simple.

I dont mean to be a dick so Im sorry, but this reads as quite highly strung with regards our club and team right now.

How does it? The performance was poor, the performances in general are trending downwards and the transfer window was not particularly impressive. It’s a relatively bad patch performance and results wise (I don’t think draws are great, especially when it’s the only result you get), and we had a poor transfer window (which I think is going to cost us the very significant opportunity of CL football when multiple usual challengers are having a bad season). The board, manager and squad are being criticised, and rightly so. There’s absolutely bot all highly strung about saying so. I’d say, in fact, that the reactions to this viewpoint are highly strung; it’s almost like “dissent” isn’t allowed.

You keep writing this and not saying what it is you expected them to do, other than spend more money, which they won’t do due to PL FFP rules.  ‘A commercial approach to football’ is just another way of saying ‘didn’t spend the money I wanted them to spend’.

Howe has had deserved criticism, and then there’s this stuff.  He won’t be criticised by me if they lose the LC Final, that’s for sure.

Britain doesn’t have an ‘appreciate what you’ve got’ attitude; quite the opposite, it exudes a sense of bizarre entitlement and a belief that it holds a special place in the world.  Given that since the Xmas break we’ve won six, drew four and lost one game that sense of entitlement is strong in some on here too.

I’ve said over and over what I expected: don’t sell shelvey without a replacement. That’s fuck all to do with FFP. We’re now short on CMs and it looks so short-sighted.

Don’t agree with you re: Britain; so many people bleat on about “it could be worse” when you want better for yourself and others.

I don’t think you understand my point: I have no issue whatsoever with any of our results and performances; today’s performance was dross and it’s right to call it so, but doing so triggers this ludicrous “don’t be so entitled” backlash.

There’s nothing entitled about saying today’s performance wasn’t good enough. Plainly, it wasn’t.

My turn to disagree. What's holding us back is the lack of squad depth, little options to change things, but we've really had one window to build on that and I'll stick with the plan of getting the right ones rather than any ones.

Well your point just plays into mine - the lack of squad depth was in plain sight before the transfer window, and we’ve come out with a shallower squad. The board and Howe have taken a brainless gamble and today exposed it. It’s highlighted their inexperience, hopefully they learn from it. They’ve had 3 windows. 2 have been good, 1 looks reckless. It was so predictable that going the rest of the season that light on strikers and central midfielders was a dumbass thing to do. But hey Ho, we got a bit of coin for shelvey, so all’s well.

To make the post gammon-proof, I explicitly emphasise that this was their first mistake.

I think most people acknowledge we played shit today? Don't think anyone is disputing that, it's just some people realise over the course of season you're going to get poor runs of form and poor games.

I disagree; some people on here have taken on a quasi-religious fervour about Howe, the board and the squad whereby any criticism makes you some kind of ungrateful heathen. We’ve been playing mediocre for about 6 weeks, and the performances are - by and large - getting worse. This boring “appreciate what you’ve got” attitude (a broader problem in Britain, I might add) will hold us back in my view. That’s the approach we took to the transfer window and we look worse for it. We’re so lacklustre at the minute and if we don’t shape up we’ll get comfortably put to the sword by a good side in the cup final. Howe has 2 weeks to figure something out - we shouldn’t be in this position, but we’ve landed ourselves in this position by taking a commercial approach to football in the transfer window.

It's nothing to do with any of that, when we're having a really good season, people find it tiresome when at the first sign of any sort of hardship, people jump on here with a "I told you so" attitude, and try and act superior.

That said a forum is going to have a lot of different opinions, if you can't handle people biting back with their own views then it's not a place for you.

This place isn't like RTG, it isnt an echo chamber of people with the same thoughts, slowly wanking eachother off in a self congratulatory manner.

But what is not valid about saying we played like shit today? That doesn’t mean we’re saying the season isn’t great! We’re saying today was bollocks.

Many on this forum won’t accept any criticism or disagreement of the board.

Exactly this. If you make any criticism you’re fickle, or an arsehole, or a closet mackem, or entitled, or divorced from reality. It’s so fucking tiresome. The board deserve criticism for a mediocre window. The players deserve some today for being shit. This place is so fucking binary at times, it’s a real bore.

Held giving immediate post match thoughts off for a bit as I can be guilty of being ABSEWLEWTLY FEWMIN after crap results, but here goes. IMO, we were shit today and got a naff result against a poor side that will most likely be relegated this season. But…

    - We were due this I think. Our squad is thin on strength in depth, we all knew this at the start of the season hence the predictions of us mostly finishing 10th-6th in the summer. As soon as injuries and fatigue (given the number of games we’ve played in the last month) set in we’d have to resort to giving the likes of Murphy, Anderson et al minutes in the PL which will cost us as they’re not good enough. We knew this.

    - We’re still doing unbelievably well. Club record unbeaten run? In the top 4 in February? In a cup final? Scandalous. That’s a credit to Howe and these players.

    - Today was still really poor. There was a disconnect between the back 4 and midfield in our build up and our passing has been way off for a while now. Parts of Southampton (a) in the cup, Palace (a) and West Ham (h) were noticeably poor. Even with Almiron’s goal, I thought everyone bar Pope and Joelinton were poor tonight.

    - Burn was especially poor and probably needs a rest, though we can’t afford that as the alternatives are Lewis and Dummett. He’s okay when we’re more defensive or sat off teams but when we have the onus on us to break sides down he’s not a great full back. Offers nowt going forward and had a poor game all round tonight.

    - Our attacking play needs a rethink. 3 goals in 6 PL games? Not particularly good enough. For any side in the league, really.

    - Hope we don’t wear the Saudi kit again. Cursed, that thing.

    - feel like pure shit just want bruno back

    - The owners are sticking to their original plan which is completely fine as we are ahead of schedule, but I can’t help but feel January was an opportunity missed. A couple attacking players and a midfielder may well have guaranteed us top 4. Especially with Chelsea, Liverpool and to an extent Tottenham being awful this season; they almost certainly won’t be as terrible next season as they have been this.

    - I also think even just these past 3 games have been huge opportunities missed themselves. Winning just 2 of those games (v 19th and 15th) would have us joint 2nd.

    - In a selfish toys oot the pram way, I’m sick of us drawing games tbh. It’s a total far cry from being hammered under Stephen Roger, but it’s just getting a bit, for want of a much better word, boring. Wallahi just WIN A GAME OF ASSOCIATION FOOTBALL PLS

    - We're 4th in February, are 8 points off last season's entire total and have made huge strides in a short space of time. It's also a great time to be a Newcastle United supporter, where we're unhappy with not winning away PL games. Enjoy it, stop the misery. Myself also included.

    - Forgot how reactionary this place can be, like. Proper throwback to the Benitez days where the level of fume and naff takes would be beyond the pale. Holding off making the pre Liverpool thread as the misery in there would be :anguish:

    Fantastic post.

?? You're actually arguing with yourself about how badly we played today. I've just tried to give some perspective on our drop off in form, how we are punching above our weight and overreaction of some fans.

Seems like my entitled arseholes comment touched a nerve if you ask me?

Nope, not arguing with myself at all. I’ve been consistent in my analysis: we were shit. My point is that the excuses you give don’t justify a performance that poor. I think they justify looking below par and a bit knackered; not being unable to pass the ball to your own teammates or having no identifiable offensive strategy.

Performances like these happen. Even Liverpool with Salah are having worse performances than these.

I think the lack of options available to how to freshen things up and rotate is starting to take its toll.

We're 1 or 2 windows away from having a very good XI. A few more windows after that maybe until we have a very good squad.

All valid. We were still shit. That’s all I’m saying: today, we were shit. We are of course allowed some off days, but I’m allowed to call them such.

Get some perspective man 1 defeat all season, in the top 4 and a cup final.

You can’t see the big picture as you’re post in the Eddie Howe thread shows. It’s about more than this game or this season, what do you expect from this group of players they’re fucking knackered man.

Totally see the big picture. To be clear: we are having a great season. I am very impressed with all involved. However, today’s performance was shit. I’m not saying it invalidates everything, but today’s performance was undoubtedly not a good performance. It’s brain-rot to disagree. We passed the ball to the other side over and over again.

No, it’s not a disingenuous argument because I’m responding to the claim that his sale has already cost us points. Which IMO, it hasn’t.

If you want to argue that it may do going forward, fair do’s, I wouldn’t argue. But you can’t really say it has already.

That’s not what I’m arguing. I’m arguing it’s a needless gamble. Sounds like we agree, really!

Every 1 of our players gave 100 percent to try and win those games, as they did today. They tried to win, they didn't get beat, that's a win for me every game

Difference for me is we played well in those games. We didn’t today. Nobody is saying we expect a win every match, some are just saying we didn’t play well today. Round and round and round and round….
