Germans are sickeningly crass in victory. The way they mention 66 is just farcical.

 

They really are. It's not that they purposefully rub your noses in it either.  It isn't malicious.  They are just sickeningly over confident.  Most of them never entertained the possibility that they could lose today.  Because they don't lose in the round of 16, so they won't.  This is just business as usual, that's what is so infuriating about them.  They will make the semi-finals, because they always bloody do, and that's the way it is.  So why bother with nerves?

 

Sounds familiar.

English overconfidence is a defence against the fear of failure.  "GET IN, we STUFFED Slovenia, f*** off back to Eastern Europe, INGURRLAND etc."  No English supporter ever goes into a match without at least entertaining the idea of humiliation and defeat.  The expectations are so unrealistically high because the frustrations and tensions build every 2-4 years.  This is why the English can be so insufferable in victory.  Every taste of glory comes as an unexpected surprise.

When they started singing 'football's coming home' after beating us in '96....it didn't occur to me until meeting more Germans that they probably didn't intend that to be as irritating as it was. 

I think Jayson has a point.  England had chances.  It was not lopsided in terms of possession.  It was the quality when you had the ball where Germany were miles and miles ahead.

I will never understand how the Germans can be so clinical and so ruthless in front of goal.  There isn't an English player in my life time who had the level of maturity and confidence playing for the national team that Ozul is exhibiting at the age of 21.  It is incredible.  He is a kid, one year removed from the U-21 side, and he just looks like a world beater.  Put that German shirt on him, and he's just another Muller, Klinsmann, Bierhoff etc. 

How do they produce these football robots?

God's a German, he really is.  Not only are they going to get revenge for the goal in '66, they are going to win 5-1.  And with a team that will do nothing in club football.  It's outstanding, it really is.  I don't know how they do it. 

 

They're superbly organised and excellent on the counter. They thoroughly deserve this, with the exception of the phantom goal. International football has always been about playing as a team rather than relying on excellent individuals, which is why the Germans have always been pretty good.

 

No question they've deserved it.  But I will never understand how a player like Klose or Podolski can disappear for an entire club season, put on the German shirt and still look like the typical Germanobot superstar.  Every year.  Without fail.  It's outstanding.  No matter what happens in club football, they will find 11 players with German passports that will make the semi-finals.

There isn't one player on the pitch today that I wouldn't reconsider for the qualifiers.  This generation had their chance and failed.  Including Wayne Rooney.

At least games like this will prepare us for some of the dross that we'll be serving up next season.

They're just well drilled, man. That's the only logical explanation. They played their game today. They sat back, soaked up pressure and counter-attacked, like they've done this entire World Cup. They have a set style of play and the players fit into the formation; the formation isn't fitted around the players.

But every year since '74?  Well-drilled doesn't begin to explain it.  They could do it with anyone they liked.  No pressure, no nerves, all confidence.
