They were both offered contracts. Nolan agreed a deal which was subsequently withdrawn. Barton is a little more complicated. But we didn't negotiate. We stuck a contract on the table and when Barton didn't like it, we removed it and walked away. What kind of negotiation is that?! One which has been proven correct in hindsight (and foresight for some). Both had limited value, realised it and went to smaller clubs for the pay day rather than compete and prove their worth with the new signings.

Barton - Left for a much bigger wage than he merits Keegan - The club were proven wrong here Shearer - Contract was up, he hadn't exactly shown signs of being much of a manager to get us up, don't see an issue here. Well none of the players leaving had to leave the club as they all had contracts which meant they could stay on on their current terms. So if they left then of course it was their own fucking fault.

Sounds like we are playing this right to me. We'd prefer Cissokho on a more expensive deal but will take this on the right terms. Both clubs seem to be now worried about getting replacements in in time so might compromise the price like we did with Enrique. Either way there's a deal to be struck so I'm hopeful.

One that has barely made the back pages, despite being owned by two of the world's richest men for the past few seasons. He wasn't wanted here anymore. He still hasn't signed the contract there. We'll see but, if he signs there, it won't be because they're better club than we are, but because they have an owner who isn't totally stupid. if they give him 100k a week then I am going to call him stupid If they give him even half of that for 5 years I'll call him stupid.

If the owner's giving Barton a 5 year contract on more than 60k a week I'd say he is pretty stupid. Let's where we are two years into his contract.

If Pardew had anything about him as a manager he'd have been the one banging on Ashley's door to get Barton out of the club. I'm actually quite confident this might be the case as Barton has always given me the impression he doesn't like Pardew because he's not as easy to dictate to as Hughton was. Pardew now has a blank canvas to shape which way he wants. If he's up to it is a different matter but let's see.
