I mean understudy as in plenty he could learn from Wilson. I agree he wouldn’t come here to sit on the bench. Isak and Abraham would probably take the lions share, Wilson backing up ?♂️ It’s pretty obvious we’re going to need another striker but they may see a young striker more happy with 3rd choice and being bedded in more appropriate.Love to take Ferguson from Brighton!

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe says that the club’s long-term aim is not just to finish in the Champions League but to “overtake everybody”.
Asked whether Sunday’s opponents Arsenal were the next target in Newcastle’s progress up the Premier League table, Howe replied: “The aim is to try and catch and overtake everybody.
Love that.
In the eyes of the EPL we’re like Lord Sauron trying to rule the big six with the One Ring of Power.
Sir Edward Howe: “We’re not here to simply compete, we want to be the One Team, To Rule Them All!!!”

No it’s not. Sissoko made over 200 appearances for Spurs.
Robertson and block head from Hull? Carrick, Defoe and Cole when West Ham went down.
There’s usually good players to get from relegation teams.

May I add, for both sides of the argument, Wout Weghorst? -
Eddie’s style may evolve again next year. Perhaps calmer more possession-based football. He doesn’t have to play the same style each year

I find a lot of people’s attitudes about ASM a bit odd. So thought I’d try and Mansplane it ?
He’s got a rare talent. A match winner.
He’s under contract and isn’t on a big wage.
He’s liked by the management and players.
Off the pitch he’s done nothing but shown generosity to the people of the area.
He’s showing a great attitude in trying to fit into a new system this season and was devastating and probably our best player until his first injury.
Every time he’s returned from injury and got up to speed he’s looked one of our most creative players.
With a bit of luck we will need a bigger squad playing 3 games a season with plenty of rotation and ability to carry injuries at certain parts of the season.
Going forward if we want to extend his contract he’d comfortably fit into our wage structure.
We don’t need the transfer fee he’d command and replacing him would cost way more.
…Yet still at the nearest whiff of unavailability people want him sold ?
(PS We have lost 6 times this season and he’s played only 230mins out of a possible 540mins not being involved in 3 of them and arguably our MOTM in two of them)
(PPS It’s noticeable in the games we’ve failed to score he’s usually not been available either)
100% correct post. You've won the Maxi debate. All subsequent replies should defer to this post.

I never seen this coming.
I wonder what the odds were.
Did they have to time it from the end of our Fun88 contract? Wish they’d have started it this summer so we could crack on with the new improved deal!

Bruce did a good job on us, but a terrible job for us. It's important to be clear with the small words that communicate the big difference.

Yep, he's shown he has a proficient knee-slide celebration. It's a yes from me!

Dodgy ankle and still the best CM in the league. Other prem midfielders must be gutted reading that

In his welcome video Schar said to Gordon that Gordon needed to earn Schar’s protection. As far as I’m concerned he’s still yet to earn it. Needs to wind his neck in or let Schar on him one v one after training
Schar came through years of Bruce abuse. I can’t imagine he takes nicely to seeing Gordon treat Sir Eddie like that!

That Spurs v Man Utd game is massive for us. Best result is a draw I think so both teams effectively drop 2 points?
Man Utd win for me. We don’t need to finish above both teams, only 1 of them. If both us and Manure beat Spurs it knocks Spurs out of the race. So I want Manure win first, draw second. -

Of course he does. He said 78 over! That’s over par, not over 0 as in taking no shots at all.

Any team without Beardsley is a disgrace
Beardsley and Ben Arfa in the same team would be brutally unfair on the opposition.

I’ve only seen the brief highlight of the goal on sky website. Can someone tell me if Willock made the appropriate knee-slide in his celebration?!

Don't be this guy. McTominay wouldnt have been someone I would have targeted but we have real football people at the top of our club now.
I'd imagine if I was sitting in a room with Ashworth and Howe and asked them why we wanted McTominay, they would have a 20 minute presentation prepared, which would go into good detail the reasons why they think he's a good signing.
It's not entirely obvious the reasons why we are looking at him but it's probably something to do with:
Nationality
Pedigree
Price
Age
Physical ability
Experience
Versatility
Personality
And while one might argue that 20/30m is too much for McTominay. Its high time we realised that 20/30m is no longer big money for a top 8 midfielder, who could serve the club for 7/8 years and if we did decide to move him on, might get 50% of that back.
Also, I'm 100% convinced we go big this summer. If McTominay is followed by a Maddison etc, it might look decent business.
That’s the same list of criterion I’d use to decide the top Labrador at Crufts! McDomino is a dog of a player to be fair! -

Personally, I'm more interested in looking at his signings for Newcastle, than having a time travelling exercise with the purpose of finding a stick to bash Howe with. He also "couldn't sort out a defence", remember.
My ratings so far:
Trippier- 9/10
Bruno- 10/10
Burn- 7/10
Targett- 6/10
Wood- 5/10
Pope- 8/10
Botman- 9/10
Isak- 8/10 potentially 10/10
Gordon- 6/10 (too soon)
No club gets them all right. We just need to keep going. If we can get 3 Botman/Isaks in the summer and 2 even younger players for the squad, we will have done ok.
Why does Tripps not get a 10? Best right back for us in my 30 years of supporting. Burn rating seems
harsh also given he was cheap, kept us up, got us to a cup final and launched a top 4 tilt.

Could the idea be that a quick switch to Maxi gives him more chance to isolate a defender?Possibly, but it’s never usually a switch to Maxi, it’s round the back 4 then Burn drills it to him from 50 yards away

Will say one thing, I’m not sure this approach of sending all of our attacking play down the right is sustainable long term. It was great when Miggy was having his purple patch but when he’s not on it or the opponent has worked him out it really doesn’t work as we have seen this year so far.
ASM is mostly isolated when he gets the ball too so it’s no surprise when it looks like hard work for him.
I think it’s time to take Miggy out for a bit tbh. He was maddening today.
Glad you showed this pass map. It was clear as day against Bournemouth. So hard for Maxi in this unbalanced inflexible system. To be at his best he needs to be picking up the ball opposite Bruno, in the deeper left half space

From Brenda’s presser today:
“It’s been a conversation the club have been having for a while. His contract is clear where it’s at. For me, it’s about making sure James is playing at the best level he can be. He’s staying available and fit.”
You speak with him personally?
“Yeah, I speak openly with the players, especially with the situation with him. We have a whole host of players out of contract in the next 18 months. That connection between the manager and player is important. It’s a constant dialogue.”
What would it mean for Maddison to sign?
“It’d be great. He’s a top player in the league. He’s shown that in his time here gradually. You can see that development take place. We improve players and give them great conditions to work in. But I won’t be begging a player to stay. They get great support here and if they’ve been here, they understand what the club is about. Players' careers are short and they have to think about the future. I understand what they’re thinking.”
Brendon’s got a baby, but Brendon hasn’t got a brain; a damn shame, the guy can’t even spell his name!
