And the pace with technique guys too, not the headless chicken types who have no timing or anticipation.

Who was a winger at the time. Obertan our new striker ;-) And he only cost half of what the Anelka sale got them. Cool, would be delighted with a £17m striker to replace Carroll. And that would actually be one of the only few times that Wenger's spent big to replace a player he lost for big money. He didn't replace Vieira after getting £12m for him. He spent £8m to replace the £17m Kolo Toure. He didn't spend much of the £26m for Adebayor. He hasn't and doesn't look like he's going to spend the £7m he got for Clichy. Henry went for £16m and they didn't spend big to replace him. They run on a unique model. We're trying to emulate them. It's hard, but when a player is overvalued by another you club, you let him go. I think Carroll fits into this situation. If we're able to sign a decent striker then I would say our team is much stronger than it was last season, and this whole transfer window would have been a productive one. We will have two wingers who - on paper, at least - will be as good as Jonas is. We will have a new offensive CM - Cabaye - who - on paper, again - will be better than anyone who played for us in that position last year. We will have two good strikers instead of one - Ba and the new guy. There are a couple of kids who look like they're better than the old guys we played last year - Abeid and Vukcic. All in all, I think our squad has improved. Whether that's by promoting from within or spending big or searching for value, the improvement and the degree - substantial, imo - is what I'm concerned about. I think a good window sets us up for a good season. We would be better off if we spent more of the Carroll money, but that ain't happening. To focus on that, I feel, is to miss the picture of us improving. If Pardew's able to implement his vision then we'd be a top 10 team pretty easily, and for a team two seasons from the Championship, that's pretty decent. I'm not a non-believer like Pardew is. I think we can challenge the top teams, and we can do so in the short-term (2-3 years). But it won't happen in one window.

Why the hell would Dortmund sell any of their players? Gotze is the future of their team and the future of German football. He's 19, technically good and has great vision for a player so young. There's fuck all reason to sell him. Although Dortmund aren't the richest of clubs, they are still one of the biggest clubs in Germany and shouldn't have trouble keeping any of their players if they can consistently qualify for the CL. Their crowd support is fantastic (averaging close to 80/match) and iirc their debt problems are mostly solved.

It does if that money's the difference between making a profit and a loss and they can keep pointing at the accounts saying "look, we're still making a loss, we're spending fuck-all, need to be careful and that". SD hasn't replaced other sponsors. It's extra, new sponsorship, so there should be no impact to the club accounts. And sponsorship of this form doesn't provide tens of millions of pounds. It may provide one or two, which isn't going to make a difference to our P&L, especially when we don't have other costs like interest on debt (which would normally cost a few million). Their logo's all over the shop man, what do you think was on the advertising boards before Mike Ashley bought the club? I'm talking about the main and prominent sponsorship, like the sign on the stadium etc., but anyway, I think other forms of sponsorship aren't worth much - main sponsorship money is the shirt.
-
Ashley will spend whatever he wants on the club. I think he's working the club towards breaking-even regularly. I think we're there already and we should be able to support a net spend of around 8-10m per year but I think he also wants to recoup some of the losses from the past couple of years, especially the relegation season which cost him close to 50m. That's his prerogative and it's obviously not in our best interests, but I think it's temporary. For what it's worth, I think the 35m for Carroll will be used solely to recoup the losses from earlier years.

We've had it before and the suggestion is as ridiculous as it was then. Sports Direct last month posted profits of £200m. Unless you think some of that is going to find its way into NUFC's transfer kitty (taking its time isn't it?) then the idea that the NUFC/Sports Direct money is all one big fund is absolutely laughable. No. But Mike Ashley's money is certainly one big fund. And since improving SD's P&L will have a way bigger impact on his overall net worth, he's always going to 'funnel' money that way, if possible. The value of the club would not be reduced because this is simply untapped revenue. We're also not going to spend less because SD aren't paying for advertising.

The ball was Clichy's. He let it bounce and backed off so Kompany had to step up and take it. He stepped up too late, but the ball was Clichy's from the beginning.

Clichy at fault there. As usual. Not taking responsibility.

What a hit.

That goal was all Silva.

Which he still doesn't have a clear solution to. The all out defensive style is more suited to a two-legged tie. I still dont see how Real will beat Barca or be consistent enough in the league to win it. I think they'll challenge for the CL again. If they're not in the same half as Barca then they will play each other in the final.
-
What mistakes did he make? They fucked nearly every team in the league, dropping only a few points here and there. Barca are just a better team and Mourinho can't do anything about it.

Bundesliga up and running. The summer went by so fast

At least we all care. All this bickering is boring to read but when we win something, it'll be fucking awesome.

If we dont sign anyone else then there will be reasons to complain. But it seems people are anticipating our transfer business being over after we sign him, and I'm not sure why.

So much nonsense being posted in this thread. Can't wait for the window to shut so we can actually focus on what matters. For what it's worth, this is the type of signing SBR would make. He's young, pacy, technically good. He's got loads of potential and he's still only 22. I understand that people would prefer for us to sign players who are about to reach their prime, but many people arent viewing this signing in perspective. He's a good squad player. We are short for bodies midfield. He is better than routledge. He's versatile and is cover for Jonas and Marveaux. Hes a good signing. This doesn't mean that we still don't need more bodies, but routledge + 1m for obertan is a good move.

Young, pacy, two good feet, good technique. What's there not to like? If he had end product hed be starting for Man Utd. He's good enough to play for us and he has a lot of potential. I like this signing.

What a fucking ridiculous preseason. A visa takes 7 days to sort out. I have a 10 year visa to the UK that I got 7 days after applying. What the fuck is the club doing. This shit should have been sorted out in the summer right after the season ended, not one week before we kick off.
