I can see it in their eyes. Basically Platini is the French version of Anal Oliver making shit up to sound important. Face it, the guy is a legendary prick, sooner he goes the better. Tell me TT what has America touched that it hasn't totally ruined?

I repeat players from outside the EU zone. We would still have plenty of Euro players. Your argument cuts both ways Parky. Whilst true that the European players will still provide competition, if you follow the argument of limiting players outside EU because they stiffle development of English players, then on the same logic unlimited number of European players would do the same. In fact if anything there are far more European players in the Premier League than those outside of EU. Even if foreign players do stiffle development of English players, then it has to be an all or nothing proposal, you can't make arbitrary demarcation based on country or region. I personally think Gerrard is speaking horsecrap. The failure of the English team is not because English players are not good enough but they are unable to replicate club form when playing for the national team and that has nothing to do with the number of foreign players in the Premier League. Blaiming foreign players is a lazy excuse. Bar a couple the preferred strikers at the top clubs don't qualify for England.. Chelsea-Drogba Liv-Torres-Kuyt Arsenal-VP-Adebayor Spurs-Keane Pompey-Benjani ManC-Bianchi-Bojinov etc...

I don't really see what's wrong with what he's saying... He doesn't want ignorant ass Americans coming over here and fucking up our football culture. That's all he's saying really. It's a fair point.

There are rules on the way. Look into it.

If the Pompey game is anything to go by the more young fit black men we get in the better.

Compared to the Yanks, Roman is a football purist.

Not fair Dave. SA's style and ideas don't really suit his strengths and without getting in 5 players in Jan and a complete change of style I can't see Owen flourishing IMO. I think Allardyce is still playing about with his style and ideas here, hence the chopping and changing all across the pitch. I'll judge how Owen's done, along with the rest of the strikers, at the end of the season. Simple fact is though, if Owen had scored half the chances he's had this year nobody would be saying a word about getting rid, or that he doesn't fit the system. Generally agree I'd love to have the luxury of judging all our players at the end of the season inc SA and that's how it should be as I've said in other threads in SA's defence. I have a niggling doubt that SA himself doesn't fancy Owen and actually tried to get teams interested in him in the summer with the constant babbling about his clauses and what not to the media. The other thing is has Owen got the patience to wait 2/3 seasons before we start firing on all cylinders? I doubt that as well. Owen needs an attacking midfield to flourish it's going to be at least a year before that is fully in place (SA doesn't really want one either imo) and at the moment we are 3/4 loses from the relegation zone and I honestly feel that if we are to salvage anything from this season unfortunately we need to get in players SA fancies and can play the way he wants them to play ie a holding midfield and counter attacking with highly mobile forwards/target man and not goal hangers. I would rather we kept quality like Owen clearly.

...and get in Anelka or Crouch...Even though I hate Crouch...It is clear IMO that SA won't bend or renegotiate his approach. The good of the team must take first place.

The American owners will be key in pressing for the Euro super league mark my words. They don't understand football as part of our national culture and identity and they are here for quick buck...They are oppurtunistic Yanks of the most irritating kind...Be off with them!

He's stirring it, but his core point is right.

I don't think limiting to 3 foreign players from outside the EU is that radical personally....I'd start with that.

I reckon the old maestro still has a drop kick or two left in him.

I think he has the interests of the soul of football at heart. I like him, he's throwing the china around and engaging.

Platini attacks Premier League's US owners By Sophie Borland Last Updated: 1:48am GMT 15/11/2007American owners of football clubs such as Manchester United and Liverpool have no interest in the game and only want to make money, the president of Uefa has said. Michel Platini, the French head of European football's governing body, claims that the US tycoons will even try to change the rules to bring in more cash by halting matches for advertisement breaks. Smiles better: Platini has criticised the Premier League's US owners Platini, who has held his position since January, has accused businessmen George Gillett and Tom Hicks, who own Liverpool, and Manchester United's Malcolm Glazer of trying to "control football" despite knowing nothing about the sport. In an interview on last night's Newsnight, he said: "Why don't they invest in football in America? You don't think they came here for the football. They don't know what football is. "The popularity of football is now so high that investors are coming over and they consider football to be a product. They just want to make money." Platini, a former captain of France, also warned that matches could soon be halted at regular intervals to allow for adverts in the same way that American football matches in the NFL are paused every 15 minutes. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/main.jhtml?xml=/sport/2007/11/15/sfnliv115.xml Have to say Platini is right.

Teams shouldn't have more than 3 foriegn players (outside EU). Limiting EU players atm is illegal.

Steven Gerrard urges limit on foreign players By Henry Winter and Tim Rich Last Updated: 1:54am GMT 15/11/2007 Steven Gerrard, England's captain for tomorrow's friendly in Austria, said last night that he feared for the future of the national team if the Premier League did not introduce quotas to stimulate the development of young English talent. England are struggling to qualify for Euro 2008, and two of the myriad reasons behind their troubles are the paucity of technically-adept, tactically-aware footballers coming through and then being given a chance in a Premier League crammed with gifted imports. National plea: Steven Gerrard has called for Premier League quotas "If foreigners do take over completely it will affect the national team even worse than maybe it is now,'" Gerrard said. "It's no good having one of the best Premier Leagues and a national team that's struggling. It's important to keep bringing quality players in - the likes of Wayne Rooney and Michael Owen - otherwise the national team will struggle. "I am definitely all for quotas. I'm all for a rule change. Something has got to happen otherwise there will be more and more foreigners and they will take over. I'm desperate for another young English player to come through from the Liverpool Academy into the Liverpool team. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/main.jhtml;jsessionid=EUURIOETHXHSTQFIQMGSFF4AVCBQWIV0?xml=/sport/2007/11/15/sfnfro115.xml

Exactly, how long do we have to wait before the manager can get his "average" team of multi-million pound internationals to string more than three passes together? 20 games? 38 games? How dare we demand to be competing with those giants of the premiership Man City, Everton and err....Portsmouth. We are not fit to lace their boots and the sooner we realise Big Sam's long term plan (target man, long throw-in specialists) the better!!!!! Thanks, Novocastrian - you've saved me from a long post in answer to ChezGiven's assertion that we should now use these 'footballing giants' as a yardstick for future progress..!! PLEASE.....!!! Couldnt care what the rest of your post says, dont mis-represent me like that for your own gain. Please. Wtf does 'footballing giants' have to do with anything i've said. Sorry, I dont accept people talking nonsense and attributing it to me. In fact in isolation, that statement above reads like utter s***. Don't get smart with me , ChezGiven - I'll 'mis-represent' you in any way I wish if you persist in doing the same thing.. and as for your arrogance about not caring what the rest of the post says - well, that simply shows you for what you are - someone who believes that they are correct whatever anyone else says. Novocastrian, Ohmelads & myself have a different opinion about the potential abilities of our players to yours - you clearly believe that the clubs you mentioned were superior to ours and we disagree, and to me, just because the likes of Blackburn & Pompey currently have TEAMS in a better position than us does NOT make them better as clubs ; it is CLUBS like Arsenal etc we should be attempting to emulate as they have similar potential to ourselves. People like you always try to twist the words of others in order to suit their OWN theories , and believe me, I think the one who is talking S--t is YOU.. Now try to resume the debate without making yourself look even more self-satisfied than you already have; - this is a subject which requires logical and adult thinking, not childish tit-for-tat stuff - and if you think I'm getting into a long-winded diatribe with you as I have sometimes witnessed between members of this board, forget it. I've made my views clear - we disagree, and that will remain the case. If you wish to pursue the theme personally, do it with someone else who has more tolerance... Chez is is a highly renumerated analyst for a living. ...our players are pretty average and the good one's aren't sure what to do on the pitch with SA's instructions. Not good. Will take time etc...
