  1. Of course they're not meaningless (which is why I said "almost meaningless"), but if the choice is a few places higher up the league with no additional benefits (winning the league, cup qualification, not getting relegated) or a trophy, I think the trophy is preferable. The entire point of football isn't to finish as high in the league as you can. Maybe long-term it is, but in any given season that's not necessarily the case. The point is to win stuff. If you've got no chance of winning the league anyway, you're better off concentrating on competitions you can win.
  2. Why would we want to swap with you? You're in the EL, we're in the EL. We have a cup, you have none. Three almost meaningless league places or a trophy (even a crap one) is a no-brainer. Ask again after the season is over. If we lose the FA Cup final, and you get into the CL, the answer might be different. If we win the FA Cup, it probably won't be.
  3. They built it at the right time. There was a massive building boom in the 2000's, so prices rocketed.
  4. Presumably, it was still sitting on the balance sheet with a nominal value, and they crossed it out due to its being no use to anyone. My understanding is that it's much as if I said my collection of empty beer bottles is worth £20, but then I threw them in the bin. Regarding our debts: we didn't have any to speak of. The massive debts belonged to our previous owners. They were paid off by selling the club to our present owners. We made about £10m profit, but spent that paying off the staff we sacked. Liverpool is in sound, if not spectacular, financial shape. Probably, yes. Ashley seems to be doing a very good job of running the club within its means. No mean feat given the awful state the previous muppets left the club in.
  5. Swings and roundabouts. You're buzzing now because you're on the verge of getting back into the CL after a fairly long time. It ain't the same if you're in it every year. Look at Arsenal. CL every year, but fuck all to show for it.
  6. Oh, that really would be one of the best things to happen ever (if not in recent times). Unlikely it'll happen this season but if Dalglish is still manager next season, then who knows? A man can dream. Not finished 9th or lower since 54/55. Would p*ss myself with laughter if The King steered them to their worst league finish in almost 60 years. Strange that it's all about the trophies. As every manager in nearly 60 years has managed to bring a steady flow of trophies to Anfield without them risking dropping as low as they could. Why is that strange? Is 6th place in the league really better than 12th plus both domestic cups and an EL place? Seriously, in ten years' time, would you rather really point back at 2012 and say, "we qualified for the CL!" or "we won two cups!"? Once you're out of the Euro places, who gives a f*** whether you're 6th or 16th? It's one thing if you end up there every season, but in terms of a single season, silverware wins. i'd want the champs league, the extra cash gets you better players and those players are more likely to want to sign for a team in the champs league than one that won the domestic cup and that hopefully gets you closer to winning the league which is the only guide to who is the best team. That's an extremely simplistic view. Obviously, the league is *the* title to chase, but 10 years of CL qualification with nothing to show for it doesn't measure up to a sack full of cups, even if half of them are league cups.

  8. Unquestioning adulation, if you please. Nothing personal, its just business My day will come!!!
  9. Fuck youse lot. Some mates you are
  10. I despise Bayern, and if they win, they will equal our 5 European Cups (I think), but I'd rather they win it that Chelsea. I'd give them a better chance against Chelsea than Real, anyway, because they can deal with physical English sides better. And they've got the home advantage. And fuck all to play for in the league, so they can rest whoever they want till the final. Go Bayern cunts!
  11. Perfect storm, tbh. In the Rafa years, Chelsea were winning league titles, but they were our bitches in Europe, and we love to wave our European Cups in their faces because they crave one so desperately. The thought of their having a chance of winning one is awful enough without that Spanish Judas putting them in the final: through all the torment of having wasted £35m on Carroll, we have clung to the slight consolation that Torres to Chelsea was a much worse bit of business For all your distaste of wanting Liverpool to win, having to watch Chelsea get a crack at a European Cup is worse for us
  12. We have to count on a Liverpool win again? How many times has that been this season? Seriously, how many times is it? I know the Everton semi was a biggie, but what else? We needed you to win the League Cup too. Because our collecting EL spots guaranteed you a place in Europe? Because otherwise you would have taken the spot for the FA Cup winners/runners up. You took the League Cup one, which means that the FA Cup one now drops to league since both you and Chelsea are qualified for Europe, thus confirming our place in Europe too. If you had lost to Cardiff then 6th wouldn't get into Europe so we'd still be fighting it out with Chelsea and Spurs. Got you. So if the Carling Cup had been Man Utd vs Man City, 7th would get an EL place, too?
  13. Apparently Cardiff could have qualified.

  16. That would definitely have to be a point to Kenny if we end up putting you lot into the CL. I reckon he should have got at least half a point for ensuring your EL place.
  17. Nah, he seemed like a nice guy. I just always think, why go to that effort when all you get in response are people taking the piss Although I don't think I've ever made it all the way through one of his signature posts, RAWK wouldn't be the same without him. Doesn't bother me. I don't have to read it if I don't want to, and I think a lot of the Liverpool hating is hilarious. At any rate, we all know my day will come again
  18. Don't hate on WOOLTONIAN He's RAWK's slightly dotty granddad. You wouldn't like RAWK laughing at GM, would you?
  19. Not in the Football forum, no.
  20. They win stuff all the time though, it's not like us where we'd probably take near-relegation to win owt. I remember when Benitez wasn't good enough for them because all he did was make them competitive in cup competition and they wanted to do better in the league. It was valid criticism, but not because he wasn't good enough. Rather his bloody rotation at the start of the season meant we started too slowly and were out of the running for the league by November. When he finally stopped it, the side settled quickly and we were competitive in the league. Yup. It's been a bad one. Hopefully, Kenny's last as manager.
  21. Most Scousers would probably fucking love that. Liverpool has a massive island mentality.
  22. Don't think they would ever have won the league under Rafa. They started going the wrong way quite drastically towards the end of his tenure, didn't they? It was all coming together nicely. We finally started the season well in 2008 (Rafa's rotating had put us out of the league by November in previous seasons, and he'd concentrated on the CL), and finished second with 86 points. Chelsea, Man Utd and Arsenal didn't strengthen that summer, and that was our chance to make the final push. The owners were already feeling the squeeze, and we got nothing. That was when Rafa spoke out publicly against the owners, and it was all downhill from there. If FSG had taken over a year earlier, it might all have been very different.
  23. Surely Ashley has been largely vindicated, now that you're within one point of CL qualification? Same will apply to FSG if they do a good job after booting Kenny back upstairs. They should try and get Rafa back. He'd do a much better job and would minimise any fan backlash for getting shot of Kenny. Yeah. It probably wasn't so smart to have him take over from Hodgson. So your saying Liverpool have made a mistake in going back and getting a manger in that the fans loved and you shouldn't go back, then you say that they should get Rafa back, another manager the fans love. No. I'm saying that now, in hindsight, his popularity amongst fans might turn out to be a problem for the owners if they remove him. At the time, it was a great morale booster all round. Rafa's popularity might also be a problem further down the road, but it would likely quell any backlash over moving Kenny, and Rafa isn't as risky a hire as Dalglish was. The main problem is not who's popular with whom, but bringing in a good manager. That Rafa's reappointment might appease the Kenny diehards is a bonus. First and foremost, he's a damn good manager.
