Exclusive by Pat Sheehan Lomana Lua-Lua is on the brink of quitting Portsmouth after sick fans said they were glad his son has died. The Pompey ace is distraught at a hate campaign branding him a wife-beater after he was arrested and released without charge following a row with his fiance. Now Lua-Lua whose life was shattered by the death of six-month son Jesus from pneumonia in January has had enough. He said "I do not mind if people criticise me for my football but people who are supposed to support me have said they are glad my son is dead, and that I am a wife beater and a playboy." "I do not deserve that and my family do not deserve that." "It has been the worst year of my life and I cannot wait for it to end." "I am hurt and confused about what the fans have been saying." I read newspapers and internet message boards and alot of what has been said about me has deeply affected me. It has become personal." .... The ex Newcastle star, 25... who signed a three-year deal in the summer, is keeping a scrapbook of the abuse. He added: "I have copies of all the bad stuff and I use it as motivation"

Darren Fletcher has revealed a host of clubs were in for him before he signed for Manchester United. He said: "When I had a few clubs after me someone said you should always sign for the best. Liverpool, Newcastle, Celtic and Rangers all wanted me and some of the London clubs were interested too. "But I decided not even to go and train with any of them. It was bad enough leaving home but to leave to live in London? In the end I just couldn't see past Manchester United. "It was giving me the chance to work under the best manager you can find at one of the biggest clubs on the planet. And I certainly haven't been disappointed with Sir Alex. "He's simply a world-class coach, different class when it comes to tactics and the gaffer is also great at motivation and man-management. The boss looked after me when I was younger. If I needed to go home he always made sure there was a flight available and I could go up the road to see my family. "Sir Alex knew I sacrificed a lot when I left home and made sure I never regretted it or became too homesick in my early days. "He's been a father figure to me and many of the other boys. But he is an intimidating man to talk to. "People often ask me if I have spoken to my manager and I'll say 'no' - he's not the type of person you approach and speak to. "You have respect for the man and what he's done. "He still has that certain presence when he walks into the room."

Newcastle have a habit of paying over the odds for players. This "Club" has already had a topic on Crouch scrapped. You're club? blueconfused.gif

Reading duo receive death threats Police are investigating death threats made to the Reading players involved in incidents in which Chelsea keepers Petr Cech and Carlo Cudicini were injured. Ibrahima Sonko and Stephen Hunt have received a series of letters at the club's Arborfield training ground. Thames Valley Police told BBC Sport: "The club is helping us with inquiries and the matter is being investigated." A Chelsea spokesman added: "There is nothing to suggest these threats came from genuine Chelsea fans." According to the Reading Chronicle newspaper, one letter said: "We are going to kill you for what you did to our players." Reading players treated the first letter as a joke and pinned it up on the door of the training ground dressing-room. But when subsequent letters arrived, players were told to treat the threats seriously and the club called in the police to investigate. Cech is not expected to play again this season after sustaining a fractured skull in a first-minute collision with Hunt in the game at the Madejski stadium on 14 October. Cudicini needed oxygen after being stretchered off in a last-minute collision with Sonko, and only recently returned to action. Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho hit out at Hunt's challenge, but neither Hunt nor Sonko faced any sanction from the Football Association. Winger Hunt, on international duty with the Republic of Ireland, said: "The club is dealing with all my letters and I don't want to say any more." Sonko confirmed he had received a letter but made no further comment. Chelsea's spokesman added: "Naturally, we condemn any threats of this nature and we will assist the police fully if - and we stress if - there is any evidence linking theses threats to any of our supporters." We passed the mail onto the police, but no extra security precautions were taken, the players weren't affected and it's not an issue." Reading boss Steve Coppell played down the death threats. "We wanted to keep it quiet, and didn't make an issue of it. We went through the proper channels and hoped it would die a death. To regurgitate it now is of no benefit to anybody. "I don't think it's for public consumption. It's something different for the media to report but it serves no purpose to anybody else." http://newsimg.bbc.co.uk/media/images/42321000/jpg/_42321408_sonkhuntsplit203.jpg

Bid to face Gunners Nov 16 2006 http://img140.imageshack.us/img140/521/picture4in3.png Shay Given spurned an Irish knees-up to report for training with Newcastle United today - and ready to walk into the lion's den which is the Emirates Stadium on Saturday. Given marked his comeback following that horrific stomach injury sustained at West Ham on September 23 with a clean sheet in his 75th international for the Republic of Ireland in Dublin last night. And while the rest of his colleagues were still in the showers after the 5-0 European Championship qualifying win over San Marino, Given and his United pal Damien Duff were on their way to the airport. They arrived on Tyneside just after midnight and reported for training with United at 10am today. Ireland's North East representative David Bowman told me today: "Everybody in our camp is delighted at the way Shay came back against San Marino. "He only had to make a couple of saves, but his kicking and distribution were first class and our goalkeeping coach Alan Kelly could not have been more pleased with him. "This was our last game at Lansdowne Road, and because Shay is such a legend, he had to do a lap of honour. "But such is his commitment to Newcastle United that this was the last we saw of him because, with Damien Duff, he was soon on his way to the airport. "Some keepers might not want to make a Premiership return at Arsenal, especially in the mood they are in at the moment, but I know Shay will not only want to play but will be expecting to be out there on Saturday." Glenn Roeder is the man who must decide whether to bring back Given and leave Steve Harper who, his slip at Anfield apart, has been a truly magnificent deputy for the 30-year-old Irishman, on the substitutes bench. Roeder told me today: "It's a difficult decision but that's what I am paid for. "And all I can say at this moment is that we are so lucky to have two quality goalkeepers in Shay Given and Steve Harper." As well as Given and Duff, James Milner, Seppe Rossi and Craig Moore, all of whom were on international duty this week, were all back in training today. This only left Emre who will be back tomorrow after making his international comeback, hitting the post in Turkey's 1-1 draw with Italy. Emre, of course, is suspended and it remains to be seen whether he travels to North London, but even though he is going to Colorado on Monday for his hip operation, Shola Ameobi could be on the plane. United expect Titus Bramble to have recovered from his back injury, and with Celestine Babayaro out for another couple of weeks, Roeder could do with Stephen Carr recovering from a badly bruised toe. The only disappointing news from the internationals was James Milner's 65th-minute substitution in England Under-21's win in Holland on Tuesday because he picked up a knock. Reoder said: "Sammy Lee said he took James off because he had a knock so we will just have to wait and see." By Alan Oliver, The Evening Chronicle
