From what I understood the main reason Ekitike didn't happen in Jan was more down to him wanting to play a full season at Reims before moving.

This was from the Reims president in Jan.

    Quote

Reims president Jean-Pierre Caillot explained to Le Quotidien du Sport the current situation with Ekitike, and that as things stands they can't accept Newcastle's offer.

Caillot explained: "It is true that many [clubs] are now realising the qualities of the player, but not us, he has trained so well for us and it is not a surprise.

"Newcastle positioned themselves for a deal and we talked, but their proposal did not suit us as we don't necessarily want to sell him and that is why we set to the asking price (€40m) quite high.

"They did make us an offer worth €35m (£29m) in total, but it was with many bonuses and some of which were almost impossible to achieve - such as winning the Champions League. We want €30m fixed plus €10 million in reasonable bonuses."

I'm all for making shrewd additions with FFP in mind but I would definitely be surprised if the bulk of our signings are players we're getting on the cheap due to a contract situation.

I would hope we'll try to get the players that Howe/Ashworth really feel will be the best players on the pitch for years to come rather trying to primarily get what we feel are the best of the affordable options.

Your post reads like an ambitious Mike Ashley era summer rather than that of a team looking to make some real noise next season IMO.

Wow ... it's not about signing them just because of the contract situation. It's about taking advantage of the situation to sign top class players that will take us to the next level quicker.

Asensio, Renato and Grimaldo are all players we wouldn't be able to sign all at once if their contracts weren't running down. The cost for all 3 together ordinarily would be around £120 million!

Grimaldo and Denayer would be insteresting left field shouts for LB/CB.

Asensio seems unlikely due to wages right?

From what I understood the main reason Ekitike didn't happen in Jan was more down to him wanting to play a full season at Reims before moving.

Renato seems pretty nailed on to go to AC Milan from what I've seen. They can have Renato and we'll take Botman!

Joao Pedro, must admit I haven't watched him enough but I don't think he's anything special.

Grimaldo - Strongly linked in Jan, but the threat of relegation likely made this one difficult as he is very highly rated, and so think this one was put on the back burner for the summer with him going into the last year of his contract. Very attack minded. 6 goals and 9 assists for Benfica from left back this season.

    https://www.jn.pt/desporto/videos/zaidu-e-grimaldo-na-lista-do-newcastle-no-ataque-deste-sabado-14515722.html

Jason Denayer - Been very strongly linked since December. Asking for £80,000 a week as a free transfer. With how well Dan Burn has done, I think we will add Denayer as an ideal partner, as he adds a lot of pace and ability on the ball. Has loads of experience, and is only just 26 years old. He wants to go somewhere he will play leading up to the world cup, which puts us at an advantage.

Asensio - Apparently we already offered him 10 million Euros a year net (around £160,000 a week). The other most interested party was apparently AC Milan who were offering him 5 million Euros, and he wanted at least 7 million Euros.

    https://www.acmilaninfo.com/marco-asensio-wage-demands-ac-milan/

Renato - We've been strongly linked with him leading up to the window. AC Milan are interested but they don't have the money for the wages he wants. Apparently he wants around what we've offered to Asensio (around £160,000 a week), which is really interesting because both he and Asensio are under the agent Jorge Mendes. I think Mendes might deliver both to us.

    https://milanreports.com/2022/03/29/renato-sanches-big-salary-at-milan/

Joao Pedro - I am really confident Joelinton is going to be pushed a bit further up next season, to play as support striker/attacking midfielder in behind and around Callum Wilson, similar to the role Josh King had when he played with Wilson. Ekitike and Joao Pedro fit this same profile, as younger back up options with huge potential, who similar to King and Joelinton, can also play on the left. Joao Pedro has the advantage of having got a good amount of games in both the Championship and the Premier League already now.

  4. Having looked back at links since Dec/Jan and then since we've pretty much looked like staying up, as well as the comments Howe has made about signings, particularly about looking at players going into the last year of their deals, I think there's a very strong possibility we see the following:

Right wing - Marco Asensio (Real Madrid): Last year of contract, price apparently set at £21 million.

Central midfield - Renato Sanches (Lille): Last year of contract, price apparently set at £17 million.

Left back - Alex Grimaldo (Benfica): Last year of contract, price apparently set at £17 million.

Centre back - Jason Denayer (Lyon): End of contract, no fee.

Striker - Joao Pedro (Watford): We were linked this morning. Watford have said he can leave for £25 million. Apparently Reims rejected a bid of £29 million for Ekitike from us late on in Jan because they weren't happy with the clauses, and so that looks like it's done. Reims wanted £33 million for him, £25 million flat and £8 million in 'achievable/realistic' clauses.

Goal keeper - Dean Henderson (Man Utd): Looking like this one will be somewhere around £15/£20 million.

I took Hope’s quote to mean 3 bigger money signings, not the total amount of signings.

I think we'll probably pay a fee for 3, and bring a couple in on a free or on an initial loan.

  6. Nunez definitely seems to be more of a physical specimen, rather than a classy technician.

Really needs to be careful what team he goes to next. Should steer well clear of Man Utd and ten Hag as I don't think he'd suit that kind of football at all.

Could see him working at Liverpool though, as they are more direct, and his high energy, work rate, pressing, pace and athleticism would suit them.

Me personally, no. I like the look of Ekitike and the fact Dortmund are interested says a lot. However, he’s 19 and our only other realistic striker option has a very poor fitness record. I think we need two strikers irrespective of what we add on the wings and in central midfield

Man ... I reckon people on here are going to keel over when they realise our first team front line will feature Joelinton playing off Wilson, and the backup front line will be Ekitike playing off Wood.

Given the strong links to Ekitike, it seems that we're going to substantially invest in a goal scoring winger/midfielder and retain Wilson as the main striker.

I agree with you. Think this is what will happen. The likes of Raphinha, Moussa Diaby and Marco Asensio will all be very strong possibilities at wide forward, and for significant money.

Ekitike will after all need some assurances that he will get regular opportunities to feature, and rightfully so, with his exploits in a lesser team in France.

  9. 1 hour ago, LFEE said:

Correct. I’m not convinced about him after seeing him play for Man Utd and his games against us for SU.

He was ropey all game in this fixture…

Yes, never mind everything else he did that season. This ropey game means he is no good!

Because of course no decent keeper ever has bad games. Nope, never happens. Ridiculous stuff.

Liverpool obviously have a very good team but I thought it was pretty noticeable how pedestrian their midfield looked against a smart (but getting on a bit) midfield once the top 3 were kept relatively at bay. Thiago had a good spell in the first half where he was dictating rhythm but, outside, of that, I thought they lacked someone with intent to break lines, change tempo, and get in the box. I guess Keita was meant to do that but he falls into a similar bracket as being someone tidy & effective rather than an explosive difference maker.

Yeah, definitely. They are apparently after Tchouameni from Monaco, and so it looks like something they will be trying to address this summer.

That terrible Sheff Utd side got a top half finish in the PL and were flying before lockdown. He was with them in the championship promotion too

Guy is just chatting nonsense man

  12. This is all the same sort of chat people had when they were clowning Arsenal for signing Ramsdale last summer, who wasn't even as highly rated as Henderson. Ramsdale is now pushing Pickford for the number one spot for England. Ironically, it was Howe that bought Ramsdale through at Bournemouth after getting him as a kid for less than £1 million.

People are so short sighted man. I hope we manage to get Henderson in. We need a long term solution at that position and he is plenty good enough and young enough to be just that.

  13. 8 minutes ago, The Prophet said:

Is he terrible though? Even with my very limited viewing of him, that seems hyperbolic.

I'm not responding to the guy anymore. It's unbelievable man

  14. Marco Asensio will be leaving Real Madrid as his contract is going into the final year and he has chosen not to renew there.

We were linked recently and had apparently sounded out Real Madrid. He wants to play in the Premier League. Still just 26 years old.

Apparently available for around £25 million. Alternative option to Moussa Diaby, as a left footed right winger.

Henderson is more of a sideways move for me. He's not a massive upgrade,  I think with a decent defence in front of him Dubravka has shown he's a capable keeper.

    Dubravka is 33 years old.

Henderson is just 25 with room to grow, having already had one really good season in the prem with Sheffield United, while also having briefly displaced De Gea at Man Utd. He has stated he wants to leave Man Utd now, and so it's an opportunity well worth jumping on.

He's a really good keeper as things stand with the potential to be even better.

Henderson would be a Wood signing. He’s crap.

    Complete and utter horseshit.

Pretty sure you say this kind of thing every time an English player is linked though

Recall you doing the same for Targett and Nketiah in January.

Nice owner Jim Ratcliffe's plane seen in the area not too long ago. We have been present at Nice games this past season to scout them. And now planes from Denmark.

Arsenal will surely use him this year?

He wants to play regularly, and Arteta doesn't rate him ahead of Gabriel and Ben White.

Arsenal have been negotiating with Marseille for a permanent transfer, but he's done so well last season that other clubs are interested and they can get more for him from elsewhere, while Marseille are struggling to match.
