  1. It's going to be a painful season.

Bruce thinks tactics are farcical and so no matter how he sets us up it's not going to work too well, because there are no instructions or directions attached.

The best way for us to line-up absence of any tactics under Bruce, is to just have ASM, Almiron and Fraser behind Wilson, as it gives Wilson a trio of quick, tricky players in and around him.

That should allow us some results just by virtue of those 4 players being on the pitch together when going forward.

  2. We've seen Bruce's version of the 3-4-3 though.

Huge gaps between defence, midfield and the forwards.

The front three not playing close together, but instead way too wide.

Wilson will end up isolated and weary just like Joelinton did.

  3. After hearing him blame the 3-4-2-1 formation (which was Rafa's apparently), for all of our dull performances the majority of last season, it was funny and somewhat satisfying seeing Potter and Brighton rock up and use the very same formation, but coached well, to deliver a dynamic attacking performance that completely destroyed us on the day.

  4. No doubt after the West Ham win Bruce must have thought he had cracked it and stumbled across a winning formula with our new signings and 'new' 4-4-2 formation. He probably told the players before KO yesterday "same again" and the performance & result would take care of itself and nobody could stop our threat of Carroll winning knock downs for Wilson with ASM doing fancy tricks.

And then just like that, after 10 mins, he must have been completely nonplussed at the fact Potter & Brighton had more than likely studied our game v. West Ham and spent all week in training how to nullify & exploit us.

I actually think Potter and his staff turned on last week's game of ours and laughed maniacally at two completely out of touch managers battling over who could play higher balls and win the most set pieces.

He didn't have to plan anything for us. He has a system that plays 3 centre-backs and so knew Carroll wouldn't do anything.

His front three stay close together high up the pitch (which Bruce couldn't manage all of last season playing 'Rafa's formation') and so he knew they would annihilate our two centre backs.

And finally his two wingbacks also stay very wide and get forward also, and he knew this would put our full backs under immense pressure, as they would continuously be caught trying to help the centre backs or defend wide.

It was a walk in the park for Brighton that required no effort at all.

What do you make of that young lad White at the back for Brighton who was at Leeds last season? Jamie Redknapp was bigging him up but he's a well paid arselicker. He had fuckall to do yesterday mind.

I haven't seen too much of Ben White, but in the lead up to the Chelsea game they showed some film of him last season at Leeds, and the hype around him seems to be mostly centred around a pretty impressive range of passing that he has. He seemed to play a huge part in initiating loads of Leeds build up play from the back. I assume he's also a solid defender.

Watching Lascelles and Fernandez be so fearful to play the simplest of passes into our midfield all game yesterday, and instead constantly go sideways and backwards, it sure would be nice to have a centre back that can pass out from the back. Bruce doesn't prioritise that though, and is happy for them to just blast the ball forward time and time again after at least 5 mins of sideways and back passes.

  6. Rafa wouldn't have even had to do all that.

The threat from Lamptey would have been identified and focused on during training in the lead up to the game.

It would have looked nothing like what we witnessed.

  7.

That is amazing. Look at their front three all gagging for the ball in that humongous gap!

Shows how screwed Lewis was in our setup. Didn't know who to pick up, and rightfully stayed narrower as that was a bigger danger.

When we played that same 3-4-2-1 formation, remember how there was no one around Joelinton ever? Just look at the players around Maupay man.

Imagine if we had Almiron and ASM that close to the striker last season and left the space out wide for Willems and Manquillo to exploit. Would have been so good.

But you know ... Bruce thinks tactics are pointless and silly.

  8. Prior to the game today ...

"I was mightily impressed by them against Chelsea. They didn't get the result they maybe warranted but, overall, I thought they did very well so we know what to expect. We know for large parts of the game, they'll have good possession of the ball because that's what they work at all week I presume.

"That's what they work at all week I presume"

Seems surprised they work on their possession play. Wonder what we work on all week

  9. He has Davide Santon syndrome aswell mind. He was practically holding hands with Fernandez at some points he was sucked in so much.

    Yeah, noticed that too.

It's because Brighton's front three were playing narrow, and so he was trying to help the centre backs at times, but then it was opening things up for Lamptey who wasn't being picked up. It was a mess.

  10. Got to love the disdain for tactics

It's in line with what a lot of people on here think though to be fair, much rather claim the players are rubbish.

Man, it's going to be miserable football for a good while.

  11. Christensen is so thick. What is the point of that?

Let him score if anything, there's still a whole half to go.

If it stays 0-0 at the end it could be the right decision to bring him down

Don't think he should be doing that unless it's deep into the second half. Very poor decision.

  12. That missed header was a shocker. Not much to work with today, obviously, but we had one gilt-edged chance and he totally fluffed it.

Possibly why he’s an 5-10 a season man rather than 10-20.

Literally every striker in the world misses loads of chances fans think they should score

Aye. You can't create one chance and blame the striker for missing it.

I'm sure that other pricey striker will commiserate with him.
