"It was clear that he wanted and needed to play games. Now he has an opportunity.
"Hopefully he'll score 25 goals - we'll be happy with that. He'll have more value, he will come back here and say, 'I'm a new player, you have to trust me because I've scored 25 goals'. Fine, no problem."
This'll go down well.
Guessing the number of goals is tongue in cheek but he's right, it's an opportunity for the player.
I like what Rafa has said there.
It's all up to Mitro now. If he does well he'll have options, one of which may well be staying at Newcastle.
-
What I find amazing about all of this certainty about Mitrovic is that I remember very clearly when he was being castigated for missing so many easy chances
This confidence that he just needs to be played regardless of his effort and fitness levels and he would score all these goals is very interesting indeed.
There was a time when he was pelted almost as badly as our current strikers are right now!

Benitez is so precise man. It's clear he wasn't doing this flippantly.
Also, starting the guy when the other players know they have been doing more in training could lead to squad disharmony.
This is idiotic, tbh. I was a goalkeeper for twelve years and I was always worse than other two goalkeepers when they compared our fitness, speed... mostly because I'm 6ft 7inches tall, but I always performed better at games because the other two were lacking decision making, determination, positioning, etc. If that's how the squad is picked, then it's poor man management. Benitez should know that manager at his level is mostly motivator, psychologist and tactician and not some professor from middle school who thinks that ones who know subject by heart are better than ones who truly understand it.
Ummm ... probably because the attributes of fitness and speed etc. aren't as important for goalkeepers?!
Come on man. Think about it.

This guy has lost the plot man

Did you see his strike that hit the post and the drag back to win the penalty? The kid is nice man.

Atsu might just be better on the left come to think of it. Can't really recall if he has featured for us much on the right hand side, and if he has ever looked good there.
If Atsu is to start then maybe just have him remain on the left, and put Kenedy on the right side, where he can also then have more chances to cut in and shoot.
Ultimately though, we just need to roll with Kenedy and Murphy out wide from now on.

West Ham are facing a crisis after their head of player recruitment was suspended following allegations of racism and unlawful discrimination. Senior players reacted with bemusement to the club’s messy end to the transfer window and remarks by Karren Brady were said to have scuppered a deal to sign Islam Slimani from Leicester.
[...]
According to a source, attempts to sign Slimani were hindered because Brady, the club’s vice-chairman, offended Leicester’s owners with comments about the club’s chairman, Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha, in her weekly column for the Sun last year.
“A fellow Premier League director reports that last night he bumped into the Leicester chairman at London’s most expensive wine shop,” Brady wrote. “The Leicester owner told him they’d sacked Claudio Ranieri.
“He then casually settled his bill for wine and champagne. Since the sum was close to £500,000 I guess the compensation to his old manager is pocket change. At least the owner can drown his sorrows in style!”
The source suggested Brady’s comments ended up becoming a PR own goal when Leicester refused to consider West Ham’s interest in Slimani, paving the way for Newcastle United to sign the Algerian forward on loan. It is claimed that despite repeated apologies from West Ham, attempts to make peace with Leicester fell on deaf ears.
haha cheers dickhead
Whew ... talk about fine margins man. We were so incredibly fortunate yesterday
Imagine being a vice chairman of a prem league club and running a weekly gossip column in the friggin Sun newspaper
What a tacky woman. Have to love the pettiness by Leicester to hold that against them for a year, and not only then deny them a chance to sign Slimani, but hand him over to a relegation rival. Delicious

Bit more detail in the SI article below. The way the negotiations are described makes me think it was true. Stinks of our pathetic approach to transfers.
-
Really wish we could have got a number 10, which makes this article very upsetting ...

Mahrez man
What an utter dimwit. Just keep doing well until the summer and you'll be off to somewhere amazing if you still want that.
The window is closed now anyway, so why mess yourself up this way? Bonkers.
-
Rui Fonte or Aboubakar Kamara apparently.
Interesting. Looks like he will go straight into the team. Also, only just clicked that their manager is actually Serbian.
Taking this into consideration he is definitely going to do very well there, as the manager will know him very well and will be able to communicate with him effectively.
Always helps when the manager shares a similar cultural background, especially when the player is one that needs to be motivated to do what he needs to do.
-
Will Mitrovic go in as their first team striker? Who have they been using there?
-
End of the day, if you are an opposing CB, would you rather play against Gayselu or 6"2, 14 stone, Slimani?
He's presence alone means other teams actually have to be wary rather than comatosed.
Any need for the homophobia?
Dude chill out

He looks quality, what is allardyce thinkingLookman joins Leipzig on loan.
I'd have taken him here and played him behind Slimani.
99% of Everton fans would have him regularly starting games for us. Allardyce and his mate Steve Walsh are total clowns. If they're not both out the door in the summer, we can write next season off.
Allardyce is very very dodgy. So apparently they lined up a number of clubs for him to go to in England and tried to force him to join one of them, but Lookman wasn't having it and instead insisted on going to Germany.
Sounds like Allardyce was trying to set something up with some pals at other English clubs so he could get something out of the deal. He is so utterly slimy man.
Reminds me of the situation that arose with Ravel Morrison at West Ham. Poor kid was finally pulling it all together there and had started doing very well, and then Allardyce tried to force him to switch agents to one of his fellow criminals, and the kid refused, and so he got shipped out to Lazio I think it was.
The guy is really bad news.

Think this guy just enjoys having more space in the centre of the pitch. Looking tremendous in there.
Just didn't look comfortable in that number 10 position.
-
Have you not seen the number of chances we have been creating and missing?
As bad as our approach play can sometimes look we still create a good number of decent opportunities.
-
Ah, okay. Saw around £9 million upfront somewhere.
Yeah man. I mean we are just existing in a different world right now.
I think Rafa is really doing amazing all things considered.
-
Watched his highlights yesterday, and he looks a fantastic athlete for his height. Great mobility and a surprising all around type game.
Looks like they are paying around £9 million upfront, and then the rest later on too.
Well worth a punt IMO. I know it's a much lesser league, but really liked the look of him. Just physically he is going to cause a lot of problems. Add the speed and decent ability on the ball, and there is a lot of potential.
Just 22 years old too. I like this sort of gamble.
-
He even looks out of shape in the video game
-
Is that real?!
Talk about genius. That movie needs to be taken to every meeting with players going forward.
-
Not gonna lie, looking at his face on MOTD after missing the penalty, I did feel for him like, he just looked like a wounded puppy.
He's a fragile guy man. It is what it is. he hasn't hidden and has given his all, so can't fault him, but just don't put yourself in that position. Got to be more self aware than that.
Hope Slimani comes in and does amazing so the pressure can be taken off him, and hopefully he can come in for spot duty here and there and do well in that lesser role.

Wow ... didn't realise Nasri was only 30 years old!
We absolutely have to look into that. My goodness we could do with a legit number 10.
